Officer Barrett bought shoes for a homeless veteran who had only flip flops. His actions inspired journalist Abby Sullivan Moore to found Footwear with Care.

Together, they now help the unhoused in Hartford. Footwear with Care provides basic walking and hiking shoes as well as winter boots to homeless and housing insecure people in Hartford,Connecticut;it also gives steel-toed boots, non-slip kitchen shoes, and dress footwear that enable homeless people to work in construction, culinary services, and offices. y Sullivan Moore, a journalist and author, with the help of Deb Barrows at Community Partners in Action. They were inspired by Hartford Police Officer Jimmy Barrett, an Iraqi War veteran with an avocation for the homeless. Moved by a homeless vet whose only footwear were worn-out flip-flops, Officer Barrett bought him some new shoes. Abby and Deb believed Officer Barrett could use some help and reached out to Fleet Feet of West Hartford, Connecticut Podiatric Medical Association, and Hartford Police Department to form FwC. Today FwC distributes shoes to many in need through large-scale footwear/foot exam clinics, Hartford Community Court, Officer Jimmy Barrett at Hartford City Hall, pop-up boot clinics and outreach to homeless living outdoors; it also responds to referrals from schools, shelters, police, and others helping the homeless.

Many thanks to Dave Clarke, the women’s soccer coach at Quinnipiac University. Coach Clarke and his amazing team gave us $650 in fast-food restaurant gift cards. This marks our 10th year anniversary of Quinnipiac support. We could not help as many people as we do without their support and yours.

Along with superb sneakers, we also deliver superb foot care. Kudos to our volunteer doctors and to PowerStep , the maker of incredible insoles. PowerStep is also one of our amazing donors! Yesterday, joy prevailed at our annual Spring Sneaker and Wellness event South Church, Hartford. Celebrating 10 years of helping, we served nearly 300 people in urgent need, providing them with comfortable, new sneakers, Bombas socks, and top-notch medical care from Bloomfield Foot Specialists, LLC, Hartford HealthCare, doctors and medical students UConn Health and Trinity Health. Special shout-out to Dave Jacobs Fleet Feet West Hartford for selecting our best shoe yet. We could not do this without our incredible volunteers, donors and supporters. We will have more posts this week to highlight our amazing volunteer groups, donors and community partners.

People are freezing in this weather. Yesterday at our outreach site South Church, Hartford we ran out of popular size coats on Thursday. Today our friends Avon Old Farms School came to the rescue, donating a carload of warms parkas and jackets. Thank you Avon Old Farms School
