National History

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated was founded on the campus of Howard University on January 13, 1913 by 22 enlightened, dynamic college women who represented the epitome of sisterhood, scholarship and service. The first public act performed by the Delta Founders involved their participation in the Women's Suffrage March in Washington D.C., March 1913. The Hartford Alumnae

Chapter

In May 1947, 13 visionary women came together to charter the Hartford Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Today the active membership of the Hartford Alumnae Chapter includes more than 100 professional women in the fields of education, government, corporate America, and the nonprofit sector. For more than 60 years, our chapter has been a driving force in the Hartford community with a purpose to provide services and programs that promote human welfare. We continue to be dedicated to the mission and vision of the Sorority’s Founders by contributing countless hours of public service and outreach programs in the areas of Educational Development, Economic Development, Physical and Mental Health, Political Awareness and Involvement and International Awareness and Involvement. Some of our signature service projects include the Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy/Delta G.E.M.S. Preparatory Program and Habitat for Humanity. Another signature program of the Hartford Alumnae Chapter is our Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Proceeds from the breakfast enable the chapter to award renewable scholarships to talented African American female high school seniors from the Greater Hartford area. With support from corporate and community sponsors we have been able to award more than $150,000 in scholarships since 1985.

Today we are celebrating 79 years of service, sisterhood, and impact! Since June 14, 1947, Hartford Alumnae Chapter has been committed to uplifting the Greater Hartford community through programs that educate, engage, and empower. Guided by our Founders' vision and our Five-Point Programmatic Thrust, we proudly continue a legacy of public service and advocacy.

As we celebrate 79 years of excellence, we're excitedly counting down to our 80th Charterversary and the opportunity to honor our rich history while looking ahead to an even brighter future. ❤️🤍

June is African American Music Appreciation Month, a time to celebrate the rich musical legacy and cultural contributions of African Americans. From gospel, jazz, blues, and R&B to hip-hop and beyond, Black artists have shaped the soundtrack of our nation and inspired generations around the world.

This month, we honor the creativity, innovation, and enduring influence of African American musicians whose voices continue to educate, uplift, and unite us.

We are proud to recognize the legacy of the late Soror Geraldine W. Jones, Hartford's first Black music teacher, whose dedication to music education helped pave the way for future generations of musicians and educators.
