Probus & Farmington High School Unified Culinary Program Collaboration
Thank you to our friends at the Farmington High School Unified Culinary Program for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities. On May 11th, students in the program, along with their mentors, hosted a thank you breakfast for Probus Greater Hartford. Probus had recently awarded a $500 SSNE (Supporting Special Needs Education) grant to this high school training program which provides life skills in food preparation and operating a cafe (called The Hawk's Nestpresso).
The FHS teacher who made the SSNE grant application request, Emily Engelhardt, thanked us during a brief welcoming address. 23 students, including 13 general education students and 10 special education students from the 9th through the 12th grades are participating in this Unified Culinary program during the Spring of 2026.
Unified Culinary creates a meaningful, inclusive learning environment where students of all abilities work together toward shared goals through hands-on cooking experiences. Students develop essential life skills such as following directions, measuring, sequencing, time management, and teamwork while building communication and confidence in a supportive setting. The kitchen provides a natural opportunity for authentic peer interaction, shared responsibility, and leadership development.
Probus members and board members enjoyed a delicious breakfast prepared by the students. Nutella waffles with maple syrup were the personal favorite of this author! Thank you for allowing us to enjoy the fruits of your labor and observe your program firsthand. It was a pleasure meeting your crew and witnessing the pride you have in creating satisfying meals! Keep up the good work!
