CAHS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Coalitions Welcome to our VITA Coalitions Info Page, where we share updates on our VITA Program assisting low-to-moderate income individuals and families!

Since 2003, the Connecticut Association for Human Services (CAHS) has worked with the IRS and Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Sites to provide FREE federal AND state tax preparation for households earning $57,000 or less. Now in 2021, CAHS has partnered with over 50 tax sites in Greater Bridgeport, Norwalk, Stratford, Stamford, Danbury, Waterbury, New Haven, and the Lower Naugatuck Valley (Derby and Shelton). Volunteers are trained and certified by the IRS to prepare simple tax returns at convenient locations around the state. This service saves each filer an average of $300 in tax fees. Taxes can be filed electronically, in which case, refunds are usually received within 7-10 days. CAHS VITA Results in 2020:

* Collaborated with 65 Statewide Partners in Fairfield, New Haven, Middlesex, Hartford and Litchfield Counties
* 17,146 returns prepared
* $5.1 million saved in tax prep fees
* $32 million in refunds and credits received

Looking for a meaningful way to give back to your community while learning a valuable new skill? The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program is calling for volunteers! VITA offers free tax preparation services to individuals and families with low-to-moderate incomes (earning less than $68,000 annually). As a certified IRS volunteer, you'll help prepare simple tax returns and screen clients for important tax credits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and the Retirement Savings Contribution Credit (Saver's Credit)—which can significantly support families.

By volunteering with VITA, you'll gain hands-on skills, build your network, and deepen your understanding of the tax system, all while making a positive impact on your community.
