As Japan’s kimono industry experiences major transformation amid changing tastes and the rise of fast fashion, designers and craftspeople around the world seek to carry Japan's textile traditions into the future with fresh relevance.

Join us online for a discussion with designers Hiroyuki Murase of suzusan and Sara Sakanaka of Considered Objects, moderated by Boston-based kimono stylist Ara Mahar (Kimono Seikatsu), where we will hear the stories behind two noteworthy up-and-coming fashion labels and explore how they thoughtfully honor generations of tradition through contemporary practices that span Japan, the U.S., and Europe.

Next month starting on Saturday, September 19th, both East Hartford Public Library branches will be hosting Japan Week 2026! Come on by and see the opening ceremony Shishimai dance, Calligraphy and Koto performances, and Japanese Storytelling at the Raymond and Wickham library branches. Enrollment for our online Japanese language courses is now open for Fall 2026!

We offer four Beginner courses for everyone's skill level. Each course will be 7 weeks long and contains numerous examples and exercises to help you start reading and speaking Japanese today! You'll also receive a textbook upon registration.

Enrollment will be open until Friday August 28th, and classes start the week of September 7th. Each course has room for 15 students, so space is limited. If you would like to find out more or register for a course, you can register on our website at the link below.

Coming up on September 19th, our friends at the Japan Society of Fairfield County will be hosting their 2026 Japanese Fall Festival at Jesup Green in Westport, CT!

They'll have Martial arts performances, Calligraphy & Origami, Ikebana, Balloon story time by JSGH member Emma-san, Taiko performance, and more! Taiko Aiko Kai will be performing again right here in CT throughout the festival.
