FROM THE DESK OF THE TREASURER, ONE MORE THANK YOU ON BEHALF OF THE COMMITTEE: Tom has many written thank-yous for all the amazing people who put in the work to make this World Cup an incredible experience to be part of in the Hartford area. I completely agree with him about the team effort it took to pull off everything we did. It was a herculean effort to make everything go so well.
However, the person who was the driving force, the centerpiece, and the captain for our chapter was Tom Lovkay. He is the reason we were able to get done what we got done. His knowledge, skill, and ability to recruit the help he, and we, needed was remarkable. The amount of time put in, on top of being a dad, a hard worker, and a loving husband, is incredibly admirable. AO Hartford, and Hartford at large, owe him a world of gratitude.
A little personal story: I joined AO Hartford in 2010, during that World Cup, not long after AO Hartford got off the ground. Tom was (maybe) barely old enough to legally be there with us, but somehow still managed to be an important piece of AOH even then. He brought in young, enthusiastic energy, and his friends and family were a big part of our early success. Him becoming president during some of that time was well deserved.
I admired a lot of the dedication Tom had. I also admired his stubbornness, as he and I butted heads once or five times back then, but I also saw a lot of potential at that age, too.
Fast forward 15+ years, and he’s grown remarkably. The maturity, intelligence, and motivation he brings to this chapter are incredible. I have a mountain of respect for Tom and how he’s handled this last year+.
From roadblocks to successes in getting things done, including pivoting to a different venue within 24 hours before one of the biggest games because of weather, it has been incredible, as an elder member of AOH, to see him mature and grow into a true leader, and to bring many of his friends, family, and AO members along for that growth.
I am incredibly proud to call Tom a friend, and proud to have served on AO Hartford’s executive board under his leadership. We cannot thank you enough, Tom, for all that you’ve done over the last year.
