Happy Weaving Wednesday!

Ashley has just finished her expertly woven tartan warp, which will be finished into towels. The fabric features a tight color palette of warm golds, blues, lilac, and bright orange that remains consistent throughout the set. It is made of cotton and woven in a twill structure, which Ashley meticulously counted out pick by pick to ensure that her color striping always had the same number of ends.

Photo Description:
Ashley stands in our Main Studio in front of our fiber wall, with Maura on her left and Anita on her right. Together, they’re holding pieces of Ashley’s finished warp.

Happy Weaving Wednesday!

Last week Dave from the Bureau of Education and Services for the Blind (BESB) ran a Human Guide (sighted guide) training at the Weaving Center. This training teaches you how to safely and respectfully assist a person who is blind or has low vision. Basic technique requires asking before helping, offering your arm so the traveler grips just above your elbow, and walking one-half step ahead.

While our staff does most of the guiding at the Weaving Center, our volunteers can help guide people to our kitchen and are ready to assist in case we need to evacuate our building.

Many thanks to Dave at the State of CT Bureau of Education and Services for the Blind and to all who participated!

Photo Descriptions:
1. The training included looking through different glasses which simulate different kinds of vision loss. In this photo 2 participants are looking through glasses.
2. Later in the training we partnered together to practice guiding each other. The blindfold is worn to have participants not rely on their vision or "what they know about the space" and instead, have to rely on the guide to help them safely navigate the hallway. In this photo Karen is guiding Pam, who is blindfolded, down the hall and back into the classroom. Dave is standing to the right.

Happy Weaving Wednesday!

Sue T has just completed a wonderful set of Christmas Holiday themed towels done in a waffle weave structure. On each towel one side features gold framing threads and the other side features red framing threads. Sue thoughtfully worked with multiple shuttles to achieve the wonderful striping and framing effects for each of these towels, sometimes using up to four at once! These towels should be both functional and also a great decorative addition to your kitchen or bathrooms during the holiday season.

Photo Descriptions:
1. A folded towel showing both sides of the woven fabric including the gold framing thread and wide stripes of dark green and white with details of green, gold and red.
2. This close up shows the fine details of the green, gold, red and white.

Happy Weaving Wednesday!

A reminder that this exhibit is open through September 1 at the Hartford Public Library.

Woven Hartford: The Craft of Community
Hartford Public Library, 500 Main Street
Cultural Corridor, 3rd Floor, June 1 – September 1, 2026

Woven Hartford pairs contemporary textiles by the Hartford Artisans Weaving Center with historic broadsides from the Hartford History Center’s Graphic Arts Collection. Displayed alongside the original broadsides, these woven works reimagine Hartford’s graphic history through fiber and color, sparking a cross‑generational conversation about craft, community, and connection. The exhibition is part of Handwork 2026, presented by Craft in America, and features textiles designed by Tara Patrina of the Hartford Artisans Weaving Center and woven by the Center’s artisans.
