Today is . According to Fashion Revolution, despite women making up 70% of the fashion industry workforce, only 14% of major brands are led by women executives. These statistics highlight a major imbalance between who does the work and who holds power in the industry.

Women drive much of the labor and creativity in fashion, but have limited influence over high-level decisions like wages, sustainability practices, and brand direction.

Today is ! One clear disparity is the leadership gap in hospitality: despite being a large part of the workforce, women are heavily underrepresented in top roles, holding far fewer management and chef positions (World Association of Chefs Societies). This is due to structural barriers rather than a lack of ability or interest. The hospitality industry, especially kitchens, has been shaped by a male-dominated culture, where advancement often depends on informal networks, mentorship, and long, inflexible hours that can exclude or disadvantage women.

On top of that, workplace challenges like harassment, lack of support, and limited work-life flexibility can push women out before they reach senior roles, reinforcing the gap.

Today is ! A key disparity in “Beyond the spotlight: Unveiling the gender bias curtain in movie reviews” is that female actors and filmmakers are evaluated differently than men in reviews: often receiving more commentary on appearance or personal traits, while men are more likely to be judged on skill, craft, or professional achievement.

This reflects a broader bias where women’s work in film is framed through gendered expectations, leading to unequal recognition and credibility compared to their male counterparts.

Today is . Women in the service sector earn about 14% less per hour than men (Harvard Kennedy School’s Center for Social Policy)- not just because of different roles, but because they are disproportionately concentrated in lower-paying firms, meaning the more women a company employs, the lower the average wages tend to be.

This phenomenon is due to occupational segregation and long-standing biases that undervalue work associated with women. These structural patterns explain why wages tend to be lower in workplaces with higher percentages of women.

Today is ! According to UN Women, less than 20% of landlords across the entire world are women. This reflects a deep pattern of inequality in property ownership, wealth distribution, and legal access. When women are excluded from property ownership, they have less financial independence and more vulnerability to poverty. We need to support women’s pathways into property ownership through various solutions, including first-time buyer programs!

Today is . According to an analysis of U.S. homicide rates by Columbia University researchers (which is published in The Lancet), Black women are six times more likely to be murdered than white women. “To uncover the fact that Black women are murdered at rates as high as 20 to 1 is heart-breaking and underscores the urgent need to make substantive structural shifts,” says Dr. Bernadine Waller, the lead author of the paper.

Measures must be taken to reduce and eliminate structural racism in the United States, which prevents Black women from accessing various resources and support that could curb such disturbing outcomes.

Today is . Although there is an increasing amount of women in medical school, The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) released a report that explains that gender harassment is still common in medical school. Nearly 1 in 3 women report experiencing gendered harassment in medical school, which highlights the need for systematic “changes to create a safer and more inclusive environment” (AAMC).

We need to advocate for professional environments that empower all individuals!

Today is . Let’s get this straight: 1 in 3 women are subjected to physical or sexual violence at least once in their life (UN Women). That’s about 840 million women who have dealt with one or more traumatic incidents of violence. Women who have experienced violence are at a higher risk of mental illness, sexually transmitted infections, and addiction, and su***de.

Violence perpetuates because of a cycle that is difficult to break. We need to invest in interventions and violence prevention that keeps women safe and empowered.

Today is . According to the 2023 Girls’ Index by Ruling Our eXperiences (ROX), which is a national nonprofit dedicated to empowering girls, 45% of fifth grade girls are struggling with their self-esteem and confidence levels. In addition, 95% of fifth grade girls use social media, with about half of these girls using it for more than six hours a day. We should be concerned about the well-being of young girls, especially considering the dangers that social media poses to adolescent self-image and mental health.

We need to ensure children have access to safe and enriching community centers and are not spending unlimited time on sites that have been found to harm mental health! Support legislation that restricts access to social media for minors. Support community spaces. Let’s empower young girls.
