In just the last day, three young Black men have been killed — two in Hartford and a 15-year-old in New Haven. This is not just “violence.” This is a public health crisis. Our ancestors are turning over in their graves because of what we continue to do to one another.

Maya Angelou reminded us that young Black boys treat their brothers the way they see themselves. If they see no value in their own lives, they will not see value in their brother’s. That is what we are witnessing — the tragic result of self-hate that has been planted and watered for generations.

This must end. All hands on deck. Families, schools, churches, community leaders, elected officials — we ALL have a role to play. We cannot sit back and normalize burying our children. We cannot let hopelessness be inherited.

Black life is sacred. Black unity is power. If we want to stop the bloodshed, we must teach our boys to love themselves, so they can love each other.

Enough is enough. The time to act is NOW.
