UConn School of Social Work Puerto Rican Latino Studies Project welcomes our community to join us in a virtual memorial service on May 27, celebrating the life of Gabe Botero, Jr. ’11, ’15 (SSW), MSW, LCSW (Sept. 26, 1987 — April 22, 2026).

Gabe earned a BA in political science and history from UConn in 2011, and a MSW in the Policy Practice concentration in 2015. While a student, he participated in the Travel Study to Puerto Rico (2015); the 18th Annual Nancy A. Humphries Institute for Political Social Work (2014); Building Bridges Program (2013-2014); and served as the Policy Practice Concentration co-chair (2015). He also earned a MA in defense and strategic studies from the U.S. Naval War College in 2025.

Gabe had more than 15 years of experience working for the Federal Government as a as a soldier, congressional aide, public relations professional, healthcare provider/clinician, first line supervisor, and senior leader. He was currently serving as a special assistant to the Veterans Health Administration Deputy Chief Operating Officer.

The service begins at 5 p.m. EST, Wednesday, May 27.

Social Workers near & far. CGA--CT is having a Public Hearing (SB503), extending the current law of lengthy sentences.

Previously UCONN SSW students worked on the policy in 2013, 2023, and now in 2026 to extend the age to 26.
