The National Guard Unit that is stationed here in Hartford City is Alpha Company 1st Battalion, 293rd Infantry Regiment "Black Hats". I am sure you have seen them from time to time running or on a ruck march. Every year they have a dine in where they remember the fallen and recognize soldiers from the unit with awards. Post 159 has been lucky enough to be apart of this the past couple years. We provide dinner and serve the soldiers. After dinner is cleaned up I usually stay and watch the soldiers get recognized. This year as I watched Captain Tyler Meyer called me to the front where he and First Sergeant David Bradley made me an Honorary Member of Alpha Company and issued me my own Black Hat. Alpha Company 1/293rd is one of the oldest National Guard Units in Indiana and can trace their origins back to the Civil War where they were part of the Iron Brigade. They did not wear the regular Union hats they wore distinctive black felt hats and were one of the fiercest fight units in the Union. The confederate soldiers named them the "Black Hats" and it was said just seeing those hats struck fear in them. The Black Hats fought in several campaigns over the last 165 years including Gettysburg, WWII, Iraq and Afghanistan to name a few. They have been on numerous humanitarian missions as well. I am deeply humbled to receive this Honor. Thank you Cpt Meyer, 1sgt Bradley, SFC Casey Burke and all the soldiers of Alpha Co 1/293rd "BLACK HATS".

🎢Blackford County always finds a way to show up for our kids.🎢

After receiving a request from Blackford County Schools to help make the 7th grade trip to Kings Island possible, the Hartford City Police Department and Hartford City American Legion Post 159 teamed up to make sure the transportation costs were fully covered.

We’re especially proud to partner with the American Legion. Their continued involvement and commitment to our community—especially when it comes to supporting local youth—does not go unnoticed.

For many of these students, this isn’t just a field trip—it’s their first opportunity to experience something outside of our community. No student should miss out because of financial barriers, and we weren’t going to let that happen.

This is what Blackford County is all about—neighbors helping neighbors and investing in the next generation.

We’re proud to support our schools and even more proud of these kids. Have a great trip on May 8th—we’ll be cheering you
