Keeping Oceana County Seniors Moving Forward!

Last week, Stephanie and Lisa represented the Oceana County Council on Aging at the joint MDOT/Michigan Public Transit Association Conference.

This conference was an important opportunity to learn about the latest MDOT and Federal Transit Administration updates, share best practices with other transit agencies, and discuss the challenges facing public transportation.

In Oceana County, we know that the buses can serve as a lifeline for many people. Transportation helps seniors get to medical appointments, groceries, activities, and essential services while supporting independence and connection to their community.

The knowledge and connections gained at this conference will help OCCOA continue providing safe, reliable, and accessible transportation to the seniors who depend on us.

We shared yesterday that we were able to find a piano for one of our friends at Our Friends House. But what you may not know is just how important music and movement is for healthy aging.

Music has a way of creating connection, sparking memories, lifting spirits, and bringing lots of joy. That’s why we’re so grateful for our team members for finding a piano and for community groups like the String A Longs, who generously donate their time to share their ukulele music with our friends.

We’re also thankful for grant opportunities, like the Great Lakes Energy Peoples Fund, which helped us purchase new equipment, including a projector and screen. These tools allow us to bring arts, music, culture, and new experiences to the Adult Day Center, especially on days when traveling or attending events in the community isn’t possible.

We’re so grateful to the community partners and supporters who help make music and movement possible at Our Friends House!

This couldn't wait for our post! It was too joyful to not share immediately!

When our staff learned that one of their friends at Our Friends House loved to play the piano and enjoyed music, they decided to do something about it!

So they found a piano!

Kudos to our amazing team members Bradley and Kim, for finding a perfect piano for our friends to play and enjoy!

Our friends at the United Way of the Lakeshore are hosting a Day of Caring on September 11th and they are looking for volunteers to sign up to help! Check out the post below for more information on how to participate!

This September 11, we're turning remembrance into action. Join United Way of the Lakeshore for Day of Caring – Oceana County as volunteers come together for a special 9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance focused on honoring local veterans and preserving their stories.

Volunteer projects will include:
🦅 Preserving veterans' stories through the Veterans History Project
🦅 Cleaning and caring for veterans' headstones at a local cemetery
🦅 Constructing American Flag Retirement Boxes for our community

Come on your own, bring a friend, or gather your coworkers and build a team.

Breakfast and lunch are provided, and we'll spend the day doing meaningful work right here in Oceana County. Friday, September 11 | 8:00 AM–3:00 PM
