Every Month is Black History Month
On this day... January 7, 1891, Zora Neale Hurston was born in Alabama and raised in Eatonville, Florida—one of the first incorporated all-Black towns in the United States. Growing up in a self-governed Black community shaped her understanding of Black life outside the lens of white supremacy and deeply influenced her later writing. Her father served as mayor, and young Zora absorbed stories, folklore, and traditions that would later become the soul of her work.
Hurston became one of the central figures of the Harlem Renaissance, blending anthropology and fiction to capture the richness of Black Southern life. She wrote four novels, including her masterpiece Their Eyes Were Watching God (1937), along with dozens of short stories, plays, and essays. Her work celebrated the complexity, humor, and resilience of Black communities, especially Black women, at a time when their voices were often dismissed or stereotyped.
Although she died in relative obscurity in 1960, her legacy was revived in the 1970s thanks to the work of Alice Walker and others who recognized her genius. Today, Hurston is widely regarded as one of the most important American writers of the 20th century, and her stories continue to shape literature, theater, and Black feminist thought.
