Community Support is a Partnership

As a non-profit organization, the Harrisonburg Police Foundation has as its mission the support of police Department programs and projects that fall outside the city’s budget. We could not be successful in our efforts without the support of many people in the community who help us marshal resources. We recognize and show our appreciation to the many community business and citizens for their continuining support.

Without the financial support to our foundation, many of the projects would simply be “dreams” of best practices OTHER agencies offer their communities. Law enforcement is a partnership with the community of which we all have a stake in. To all we offer our sincere thanks.

Our banquet event is held each year to honor the following categories of achievement.

Community Service Award-Presented to any police employee—to include Auxiliary members—who has demonstrated community outreach through numerous, consistent actions or the creation of programs that are not part of their formal duties and that these actions leave the community with a positive impression of the Harrisonburg Police Department.

Harper Award-Presented to a police officer—to include Auxiliary Police officers—that is readily recognized by their co-workers as demonstrating a contagiously positive attitude to the performance of their duty, exhibits a “can do” attitude to all tasks assigned and who consistently demonstrates their concern for the physical and emotional well being of fellow officers.

Customer Service Award-Presented to any police employee—to include Auxiliary members—who consistently demonstrates a courteous and professional work ethic while responding to the needs of the organization or the community. Responds to the needs of the community or department employees politely, efficiently and effectively. Identifies and resolves issues within their sphere of responsibility that detract from the Department’s goal of providing excellent service to all customers.

Leadership Award-This award is presented to a police officer of the rank of Corporal or above who consistently, not only demonstrates the highest standard of performance, professionalism and work ethic in their job assignment but also demonstrates the ability to develop, manage and guide their personnel in achieving the same level of excellence.

Officer of the Year-This award is presented to a police officer of any rank that has gained the respect of their peers for consistently demonstrating the highest standard of performance and exceptional achievement and whose formal and informal leadership qualities exemplify the officer as a role model within the organization. The recipient is seen as a self-starter who places the mission of the Harrisonburg Police Department before their own comfort.

Recruit of the Year-This award is presented to a police officer who has one year or less of service and who is recognized by supervisors and fellow officers alike as having exceptional character, a positive work ethic and demonstrates remarkable self confidence and composure when responding to the needs of the public.
