Big Brothers Big Sisters of Harrisonburg-Rockingham County is committed to providing one-to-one mentoring relationships to support the critical social and emotional development needed to help build resilience and promote the mental health and well-being of youth. In addition, we hold ourselves accountable for positive, measurable, evidence-based outcomes in self-confidence, academics, healthy relationships, and the disapproval of risky behaviors.

Today we’re celebrating Marc Lonett, our Sports Buddies Coordinator, on his 5-year work anniversary with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Harrisonburg-Rockingham County!

Marc brings play to just about every situation. If it can be made into a game, he’ll find a way! That playful spirit makes him the perfect person to lead our Sports Buddies program, where youth and mentors build meaningful relationships through playing, watching, and enjoying sports together.

Marc is always on brand and always looking for ways to help matches make memories. From planning activities to supporting matches and building relationships with sports-related community partners, Marc brings creativity, energy, and plenty of fun to everything he does.

Behind all that play is a deep commitment to youth safety, positive youth development, and helping Bigs and Littles build strong relationships that last.

Marc, thank you for five years of bringing the fun and helping young people and mentors make memories together! We’re so glad your big-kid-at-heart energy is part of the BBBSHR team.

Big Olga and her Little have been matched through our Community-Based Mentoring Program since January 2026, and they’re already finding plenty of ways to have fun and learn together!

From walking around EMU’s campus to exploring the science building and visiting the planetarium, these two have discovered that science is even more fun when you have someone to share it with. They also got creative at our BBBS STEM Night, where they made slime together!

Most importantly, Olga is building a relationship rooted in care, encouragement, and showing up. Her Little’s parent shared, “I love the way she [Olga] treats my daughter. She shows so much care towards her.”

We love seeing matches find common interests while building a friendship that can make a lasting difference. 💚

Two weeks ago, our Program Director attended a regional Big Brothers Big Sisters conference in Minneapolis. One of her favorite parts was “sitting in a room full of people who also do what I do and love BBBS,” while learning what works—and what doesn’t—for other agencies.

She also brought home helpful guidance for conducting a program audit, giving our team another way to strengthen the support we provide to Bigs, Littles, and families.

When our leadership has opportunities to learn, connect, and share with others in the BBBS community, our whole community benefits. Together, we’re continuing to build stronger programs and ignite the power and promise of local youth.

There are two ways to support us during Chick-fil-A's Community Care Event:

On World Day of Bullying Prevention, we’re reminded that every young person deserves to feel safe, seen, heard, included, and valued.

Sometimes, making a difference looks like listening. Including someone who feels left out. Speaking up when something isn’t right. Reminding a young person that they matter.

A caring mentor can be that person in a young person’s corner. Through one-to-one mentoring, Bigs help Littles build confidence, connection, and a stronger sense of belonging.

At Big Brothers Big Sisters of Harrisonburg-Rockingham County, we believe in the power of meaningful one-to-one mentoring relationships to help young people discover their strengths and believe in their potential.

We’re just two weeks away from the Bigger Together 50th Anniversary Celebration: 50 into Infinity, and we’d love for you to be there!

Join Big Brothers Big Sisters of Harrisonburg-Rockingham County on Wednesday, October 14, from 12–1 PM (doors open at 11:30 AM) at Spotswood Country Club for a special luncheon celebrating 50 years of life-changing mentoring relationships in our community.

Enjoy stories of impact, reflections from participants in our programs, recognition of community champions, and a look at what’s ahead for mentorship in our region. After 50 years, one thing is clear: the need for caring adult relationships in the lives of young people is infinite.

Big Jessica and Little Stephanie have been matched through our Community-Based Mentoring Program since September 2022!

Jessica takes her role as a Big seriously, always looking for ways to support Stephanie and be there when she needs an extra hand. When Stephanie was ready to get her learner’s permit, she wasn’t sure what documents she needed to bring to the DMV. With support from Stephanie’s mom, Jessica helped make sure she had everything she needed, then went with her to the DMV and stayed through the entire process. Jessica knew how intimidating that experience could feel and wanted Stephanie to know she didn’t have to navigate it alone.

Even more special, this year, Stephanie was honored to be a bridesmaid in Jessica’s wedding! Stephanie shared that she was excited and honored to be part of Jessica’s special day and had a wonderful time celebrating with her.

Although Jessica lives two hours away, she continues to make the trip to see Stephanie each month. Distance hasn’t stopped her from being an active and dedicated Big.

Mentorship is about more than spending time together. It’s about showing up, offering encouragement, and being there for the big moments and the little ones along the way. Jessica and Stephanie are a beautiful example of what can grow when someone chooses to keep showing up.
