Looking for a fun activity to do this summer? Visit the Shenandoah River Adventure where you can rent a kayak, tandem kayak, or tube and explore the beauty of the south fork river of the Shenandoah! As a Community Health Educator, I'm also helping share important information with the Latino community about safe fish consumption and mercury awareness while on the river. Fun on the water starts with staying informed!

RECAP

We are so honored to have participated in this year's annual RIVERFEST. This event was a great way to be out in the local Waynesboro community to help spread information on mercury consumption in the South and Southfork River of the Shenandoah. We were one of many informational and engaging booths that provided important information on wildlife, nature and overall health. We had lots of promotional items to hand out during our fishing simulator, our stress ball fish bobber keychains, and as always our rainbow fish pamphlets and flyers that provide information you would find on the fish advisories along the river. Enjoy this small recap of our day and we hope to see and connect with even more folks at next year's Riverfest. 🐟🎣

Estamos muy honrados de haber participado en el RIVERFEST anual de este año. Este evento fue una excelente oportunidad para estar presentes en la comunidad local de Waynesboro y ayudar a compartir información sobre el consumo de mercurio en el río South y el South Fork del Shenandoah. Fuimos uno de los muchos puestos informativos e interactivos que brindaron información importante sobre la vida silvestre, la naturaleza y la salud en general. Tuvimos muchos artículos promocionales para repartir durante nuestro simulador de pesca, nuestros llaveros de pez bobber antiestrés con flotador, y como siempre, nuestros folletos y volantes del pez arcoíris que contienen información similar a la que se encuentra en los avisos sobre el consumo de pescado a lo largo del río.

Happy Monday!

We are so happy to have been invited alongside so many other amazing and informative organizations for this years Teen Health Fair. We were able to inform so many students about mercury consumption in the South and Southfork River of the Shenandoah by handing out our fish brochures. Check out our poster we had for the fair. A big thank you to for inviting us out and to all the staff of the high schools we visited at Broadway High School, Rocktown High School, Turner Ashby High School and Page County High School. Promotores de Salud is excited to collaborate with the South River Watershed Coalition to host the annual Riverfest in downtown Waynesboro. This springtime event brings the community together to enjoy warm weather, food, games, prizes, and opportunities to learn about the history
and science of our local watershed. Highlights include the duck race at Constitution Park and a special screening of the short film “Chessie’s Big Adventure.”

As April is National Minority Health Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about health disparities and promoting better health outcomes for racial and ethnic minority communities, PDS plays a vital role in community outreach. Our program focuses on promoting health education within the Latino community and those living and working in and around Waynesboro,
as well as along the South and South Fork Shenandoah River. We provide guidance from the fish consumption advisories and help explain the potential effects of mercury exposure. We educate Spanish speakers and other community members while collaborating with nonprofit partners to
share important information widely among impacted populations.

Exciting news for 2026 🥳

The Community Health Worker (CHW) training is starting up this upcoming March offering sessions in Spanish and English

Sign up with the QR code on the interest form and make sure to share with any other community members that would benefit from this training.

Also, we have OFFICIALLY made a TikTok account where we will be sharing fun clips of visits to the South River so make sure to give us a follow to see updates and ways to keep our river safe. 🎣
