On this Mother’s day, we remember, celebrate and honor the lives of the women and parents who have gone before us, those persevering among us, and all those who Jesus would bless. I thought maybe we should have some beatitudes for this day, this place, and these people.
-Pastor Alexis
Blessed are the mothers like Tamar, struggling with infertility and miscarriage.
Blessed are those like Moses’ mother, who put her child up for adoption, trusting another family to love that child into adulthood.
Blessed are the mothers like Rachel, counting the women among their family and friends who year by year and month by month get pregnant, while they wait.
Blessed are those like Pharaoh’s daughter, called to love children who are not theirs by birth.
Blessed are the mothers like Naomi, who have known the bitter sting of a child’s death.
Blessed are those who, like many, are watching their mothers age, and disappear into the long goodbye of dementia.
Blessed are the mothers like Mary, who are pregnant for the very first time and waiting breathlessly for the miracle of their first child.
Blessed are those whose relationship with their Mothers is marked by trauma, abuse, or abandonment.
Blessed are the mothers who are watching their child battle substance abuse, mental illness, or another untenable situation completely out of their control.
Blessed are those like Joseph and Benjamin, whose Mother has died.
Blessed are the mothers for whom being a mother is the greatest joy they have ever experienced.
This mother’s day, wherever and whoever you are, know that we walk with you.
You are loved.
You are seen.
You are worthy.
You are a gift.
And may you know the deep love without end of our big, wild, beautiful God who is the very best example of a parent that we know.
Amen.
