The Gus Bus

The Gus Bus Our mission is to create safe spaces and connections for families beyond the school day.

The Gus Bus is an academic enrichment program that serves Harrisonburg through mobile classroom vehicles, afterschool programs, in-home tutoring, and summer camps.

🎉 A huge congratulations to our Gus Bus 5th graders who are graduating and heading to middle school, we’re so proud of you!

Wishing everyone a wonderful summer. We can’t wait to see familiar and new faces at our summer camp starting June 8th and at summer Bus Stops beginning June 15th. 😎🌈

✨ STAFF SPOTLIGHT ✨ Say hello to Leaf Stapel, our awesome Program Manager at Keister Elementary! Leaf joined us in January and has already brought so much heart, creativity, and energy to our programs.

💛 A Rockingham County native, Leaf has spent more than a decade working with children. After earning their Social Work degree from VCU in 2021, they jumped right into supporting students in both teaching and social work settings, and we’re lucky to have them.

🌲🐸 Fun fact: Leaf loves the little joys in life and is gearing up for a summer full of nature lessons on the Gus Bus. They’re even raising tadpoles (yes, really!) and hope to bring that hands‑on learning to our students.

🎉 We are overjoyed to have Leaf on our team and can’t wait to see how they continue to shine throughout summer programming and into the next school year!

After exploring the science behind how kites work, students jumped into a hands-on kite investigation, flying their own diamond and sled kites and comparing how each one soared. Such a fun activity to learn through play!

Students have really been enjoying lessons with Mr. Logan over the last few weeks at our Bluestone Neighborhood Bus Stops! 🚌 They’ve been exploring activities like folding their own origami, practicing with symmetry, and designing tessellations, mixing creativity with academics in such a fun way. And with the warmer weather, it’s been the perfect time to learn outside!☀

Literacy game day at Stone Spring Afterschool offered a fun lineup of interactive literacy and math games! 💚😄

✏ Photo 1: Jenga Parts of Speech- Students played Jenga with a twist: before pulling a block, they identified the part of speech of an underlined word.
✍ Photo 2: Vocabulary Relay Race- Teams raced to list synonyms or antonyms for different words on chart paper.
🔢 Photo 3: Trifecta- Students completed multiplication fact family triangle in a gamified way. First to clear their cards won!
💰 Photo 4: Money Bags- Students practiced identifying, counting, and combining coins and bills to quickly create specific amounts of money.
🗣 Photo 5: Parts of Speech matching- Students matched nouns, verbs, and adjectives to underlined words in sentences.
