NATIONAL GARDEN WEEK

Members of Shaker Farms Garden Club celebrated National Garden Week, the first week in
June, with a Program “Return of the Natives” at the Harrison Branch of the Public Library
Monday evening June 3 at 7:00. Brenda Manger gave the power point presentation developed
by Gail Chuck that showed native trees, shrubs, perennials and annuals that grow in her yard in
Harrison.
Native plants are essential for the health of native bees and other pollinators as well as animals
native to our area. When a choice can be made from native and nonnative always choose
Native! A list of local providers of Native Plants as well as mail order companies were included
in the handouts.
Doug Lohman’s Greenhouse and Stephanie Frankenstein’s Adopt A Plant greenhouse donated
native plants along with those from Garden Club members. Each attendee took away native
plants.
Beth Harnist was available to answer questions about Native Plants.

Beautify Harrison Pots

80 Beautify Harrison Pots are again disbursed throughout Harrison Streets and Businesses. Shaker Farms Garden Club members filled with pots with three different designs this year: Dwarf cannas, Whopper Begonias and trailing vinca; Dwarf evergreen, Whopper begonia and trailing vinca or Purple fountain grass, sweet potato vine and angel wing begonias. The Harrison Maintenance crew picked up the planted pots from Lohman’s Greenhouses and delivered them to downtown Harrison and businesses in May in time for the Memorial Day parade. The Maintenance crew will keep them watered throughout June-August and club members will trim and maintain them throughout the summer. The urns at the Harrison Branch Library and the planters at the Harrison Community Center were also planted with these plant varieties. Local businesses participating this year include Triple Cats, Conservative Financial, Parlour on the Avenue, Minges Funeral Home, Al Smith Paint Store, Westside Driving School, Harrison Building and Loan, Dr. Mike Ringle, SW Development Village Pharmacy Monk’s Kitchen, Market Street Grille, Jackman Hensley Funeral Home, Harrison Home Bakery and Comey &Shepherd Realtors.
