I know there was some concern over the hydroseeding at Baker Prairie yesterday but I have GREAT news! Here is what we know now from The Nature Conservancy: "The city and contractor have been very thoughtful and amenable to reseeding the site with appropriate seed. They harvested and staged topsoil from the site, which contains native prairie seed, and redistributed it over the site. To secure the disturbed ground, they used seed oats as an annual cover and mixed in some Indian grass and big bluestem that I provided and was hydro seeded by the contractor.
Last fall I worked with students from the middle school and North Ark to harvest prairie seed and we scattered that on site last spring. I walked the site in mid September and saw evidence of natives coming up along the margins of the disturbed area. I am confident the prairie will recolonize these narrow strips of disturbed area soon."
The hydroseeding was very thoughtfully done, we thank the City of Harrison & TNC for that! We look forward to seeing the recolonization of the disturbed area!
