Some people leave bush honeysuckle alone to benefit deer. Unfortunately, honeysuckle is not good for deer. The honeysuckle shades out tasty native plants that deer love. Food is scarce at this time of year for deer, and removing honeysuckle and other invasive plants makes way for native plants that deer have adapted to eat for millions of years. We promise, the deer will thank you!

It’s , so we will be talking about different Ohio invasives this week. Today's focus is on bush honeysuckle (Lonicera spp.). Bush honeysuckle is a non-native deciduous shrub that can aggressively overtake areas of land and shade out native plants. They produce red berries that are high in carbohydrates and low in fats and nutrients. These berries can be detrimental to migrating birds that require healthier native food sources for energy. Bush honeysuckle also leaf out earlier in the spring and hold their leaves longer in the fall than native species.

Bush honeysuckle has simple opposite leaves. Its flowers are fragrant tubular flowers that are typically white and turn yellow as they age. They generally have multiple stems with larger stems showing groves that look like stripes.

If there are only a few small plants, they can be dug or pulled out. However, mechanical control is usually not enough. Herbicides are required to kill this aggressive plant that will resprout if cut without chemical controls.
