When Can Your Baby Climb Stairs
One day, your baby may suddenly discover the stairs and decide they are the most exciting adventure in the house. Climbing stairs is a big gross motor milestone that develops as babies gain strength, balance, coordination, and confidence. Many babies begin experimenting with crawling up stairs around 9–12 months, while walking up stairs with help may happen closer to 12–18 months, but every child develops at their own pace.
At first, your baby may crawl up one step at a time, using their hands and knees while you stay close beside them. As they become more confident, they may practice stepping up while holding your hand or a sturdy railing, eventually learning to climb more independently. Going down the stairs is often more challenging because it requires greater balance, body awareness, and control.
Even when your baby seems confident, stairs should never be considered a safe place for independent play. Use properly installed safety gates at the top and bottom of stairs, keep stairs clear of toys and other objects, and stay within arm’s reach when your baby is practicing. Avoid relying on baby walkers near stairs, and teach older siblings that gates are there to help keep the baby safe.
Stair climbing is an exciting opportunity to build strength and coordination, but your little explorer still needs a grown-up close by. With supervision, practice, and a safe environment, you can help your baby build skills while protecting them from preventable falls.
