White Water Shaker Village

White Water Shaker Village The Friends of White Water Shaker Village are currently working to restore this former Shaker community (1823-1916).

The Shaker buildings and grounds are being restored by the Friends of White Water Shaker Village, so that they may be opened to the public. Private tours for groups may be arranged by contacting [email protected]. The White Water Shaker Village is the only intact Shaker Village remaining of the five that were once in Ohio. Responding to public interest in the White Water Shaker community, the Fri

ends of White Water Shaker Village was organized in 2002. In 2007, the Friends leased the North Family buildings and surrounding acreage from Great Parks (formerly the Hamilton County Park District) to preserve and restore these historically and architecturally significant structures. The Friends of the White Water Shaker Village is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. America 250-Ohio's May theme is Ohio Creates: Arts, Culture, & Literature.

The Shakers are known to have contributed to American culture in many ways – as skilled craftsmen (architecture, furniture, handicrafts) and composers of music and poetry. The Shakers believed that making something well was, in and of itself, an act of prayer.

John Hobart arrived at White Water in 1846 with his wife, Naomi, and eight of their children. Hobart was a talented poet and composed poems on a wide range of topics. At mid-century, he was one of the most prolific composers in the Shaker West. At the close of 1860, most of the Hobart family left White Water, except for John and one daughter. John died in 1866 and is buried at White Water.
