The subject of concrete foundations came up today on a post I saw… so many cemeteries out there with outlandish requirements for monument foundations! Some of them are absolutely insane! No amount of concrete will ever stop a monument from settling and leaning… the lean is a product of setting monuments too soon after a burial. The grave continues to settle and sometimes collapse which in turn makes the soil around it move.
If I owned a cemetery and made the rules I would require a 1 year waiting period before placing monuments on graves and everything would be set on a 6” gravel base or a minimal concrete base to allow for easier lawncare around the monuments.
The more concrete you put under a monument the harder it will be to do anything with that monument when it does lean. Show me a cemetery that has not one single leaning monument because of extra deep foundations and I will recant my statement… but until then I will always have this stance on concrete in cemeteries.
