By Mid August 1864, those who would be politicking on Lincoln’s behalf began to arrive at the executive mansion for a report. Simon Cameron and Thaddeus Stevens from Pennsylvania were two of the first to arrive. The news from the Keystone state, and key to the election, was not good either.

“If the election was to be held today, you would not win our state,” said Cameron. “Nor would you win, I predict, Illinois or Indiana.”

“Sir, your calling for 500,000 more volunteers also did not help our cause either,’ said Stevens, the most known radical on capitol hill. “The reaction in Pennsylvania to the call for volunteers, well, I will put it bluntly, was one of complete dissatisfaction with you and this war, Mr. President.”

The Hershey Civil War Roundtable congrats Angela on her new position.

Angela Zombeck has been named to the post of chief historian for Emerging Civil War (ECW).

Angela Zombek is Professor of History and Graduate Coordinator at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. She earned her BA at the College of Wooster, MA at the University of Akron, and PhD at the University of Florida. She taught at St. Francis High School and at St. Petersburg College prior to joining the History Department at UNCW in 2018. While in graduate school, Angie worked for the National Park Service at Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park and at Cuyahoga Valley National Park. She has also served as a Copie Hill Fellow at the American Battlefield Trust.

Angie has published widely on prisoners of war, Civil War prisoners and the press, and Florida’s Civil War history. She wrote Penitentiaries, Punishment, and Military Prisons: Familiar Responses to an Extraordinary Crisis during the American Civil War, published by Kent State University Press in 2018, and the forthcoming Stronghold of the Union: Key West Under Martial Law, soon to be published by University Press of Florida.

ECW’s chief historian oversees the quality control of the platform’s historical content, including blog content as well as content in ECW’s various publication projects, including the Emerging Civil War book series.

Welcome back to our continuing Revolutionary War series!

During the American Revolution, two battalions of the York County militia were raised in the area surrounding what a few years later became Gettysburg—this was prior to the formation of both Gettysburg and Adams County, which occurred in 1786 and 1800 respectively. Officers of these two battalions hailed from nearby Straban and Cumberland townships.

During the Civil War, yet another militia unit formed in this area, Company A, 26th Pennsylvania Emergency Infantry. Raised on June 22, 1863, this company consisted mostly of students from Pennsylvania College and the Lutheran Theological Seminary, as well as a few men from the town of Gettysburg. On June 26, the unexperienced militia attempted to hold off Confederate Maj. Gen. Jubal Early’s division before being forced to withdraw.
