Hershey Civil War Roundtable

Hershey Civil War Roundtable We meet on the third Thursday of each month except in December, at Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 542 8000 Derry Street,
Harrisburg, PA.

We discuss the Civil War - North and South. Also can join us on Zoom. In 1991, closely following the presentation of the Ken Burns’ program series “The Civil War”, a group of friends in Hershey started meeting at noon in the old Hershey Library. Someone would read a book, make a report and the remaining part of the hour was spent on discussion. This soon enlarged into an evening as well, still hel

d in the Hershey Room of the library. With the building of the new Hershey Library, our meeting moved there. With more formalization, the now Hershey Civil War Roundtable began having guest speakers, authors, historians, Gettysburg Battlefield Guides, etc.. The Hershey Civil War Roundtable now meets at the Country Meadows Retirement Community every third Thursday of the month at 7:30 p.m. We continue to be one of the most active Civil War Roundtables in central Pennsylvania scheduling top authors, historians and reenactors. With the celebration of the 150th Anniversary of the Civil War, interest in the conflict has grown and the Hershey Roundtable is now welcoming a new generation interested in the learning more about one of the greatest happenings in our nation’s history.

I highly recommend getting Rick’s book. I have his book “Curtiss Motorcycles: 1902-1912” and it’s an excellent read.

Welcome back to our continuing Revolutionary War series!

During the American Revolution, two battalions of the York County militia were raised in the area surrounding what a few years later became Gettysburg—this was prior to the formation of both Gettysburg and Adams County, which occurred in 1786 and 1800 respectively. Officers of these two battalions hailed from nearby Straban and Cumberland townships.

During the Civil War, yet another militia unit formed in this area, Company A, 26th Pennsylvania Emergency Infantry. Raised on June 22, 1863, this company consisted mostly of students from Pennsylvania College and the Lutheran Theological Seminary, as well as a few men from the town of Gettysburg. On June 26, the unexperienced militia attempted to hold off Confederate Maj. Gen. Jubal Early’s division before being forced to withdraw.
