Harrisburg Opera Association

Harrisburg Opera Association Our mission is to offer the region outstanding artistic productions with an emphasis on diversity, education and philanthropy.

Visit our website at: www.harrisburg-opera.org The Harrisburg Opera Association was incorporated in 1971, as the "Harrisburg Civic Opera", which name was amended in 1995. In actuality, the organization dates back to the late 1920's, with an interruption of some 15 years through World War II to the late 1950's. In 1993 the organization successfully moved from amateur to professional. Since its

early beginnings, HOA mounted more than 50 major productions for opera enthusiasts from Central Pennsylvania and beyond. Through the years when opera was considered "art for the elite", Harrisburg Opera not only survived, but also thrived by nurturing local talent and providing a multitude of volunteers with production and stage experience. As HOA continued to grow, the productions become larger, more elaborate and more professional with a steadily increasing budget all with the goal of attracting major talents, assisting emerging young singers on their way to major careers and featuring local performers in the Opera's productions. Our mission is to offer the region outstanding artistic productions with an emphasis on diversity casting, collaborate with regional groups and develop successful educational, outreach and therapeutic programs that benefit adults and youth for the city of Harrisburg and Central Pennsylvania. Tami Swartz is their new Executive Director and Artistic Director. Stay tuned for exciting news about future performances!

HOA presented Opera in the Park Women’s Voices on Sunday August 17th, 2025 at the pavilion in Italian Lake Park Harrisburg, PA.

This year's concert was a raucous departure from our usual format with a narrator who seriously meant business by changing the ends to operas and encouraging our divas to really speak out about the state of their circumstances in opera and elsewhere. Celebrating women’s points of view throughout the ages along with their music and lyrics the concert was whopping success with a standing ovation!

Metropolitan Opera artist twin sisters Lori Phillips dramatic soprano and Mary Phillips mezzo soprano along with Central Pennsylvania’s acclaimed singing actor Debbie Smith and HOA’s Artistic Director & Executive Director Tami Swartz, shared an afternoon performing multiple music forms. Also featured were Metropolitan Opera tenor, multi-instrumentalist & arranger Adam C J Klein, multi-instrumentalist Michael Gamon, pianist, trombonist & arranger Greg Strohman, and woodwind virtuoso Tom Strohman.

Attending Stars on 1/6:
Debbie Smith - Narrator Extraordinaire, Singing Actor
Michael Gamon - Erstwhile Narrator, Multi-instrumentalist
Adam C J Klein - Tenor, Multi-instrumentalist, Arranger, Director of Videography
