We're an entirely volunteer-run nonprofit that has helped more than 10,000 dogs and cats get spayed or neutered. Our next goal is 15,000, but we can't get there alone.

🐾 Everybody wants the puppies. Everybody loves the kittens. But who cares about their parents?

In cruel breeding operations, mothers and fathers can spend years producing babies for profit. And when they can no longer reproduce? Some are simply discarded.

💔 Their babies are worth thousands. Their own lives are treated as disposable.

And when those adorable puppies and kittens grow up unwanted and unaltered, the cycle continues.

It's time we talked about the lives behind those cute little faces.

🐾 “I need to surrender my pet.”

Before you judge them, ask one question:

“What would help you keep them?”

Sometimes the answer is a bag of food. A spay or neuter surgery. A trainer. A ride to the vet. Temporary foster care. A little help through a difficult month.

And sometimes?

Nothing will fix the situation. The animal truly needs another home.

So they call a shelter. Full.
Another. Full.
A rescue. No fosters.
Another rescue. No room.

Then what?

Telling someone “Don’t abandon your animal” is absolutely right.

But it isn’t a solution.

“Just stop feeding them.”
It sounds like a solution to community cats.

But is it?

If feeding is banned, the cats don’t suddenly disappear. And we need to ask an uncomfortable question: Do we really want to look out our windows and watch an animal become sick and starve because someone is prohibited from feeding it?

More importantly, hunger doesn’t prevent kittens.

There’s another part of this conversation we rarely talk about, too: What role could rental properties play in preventing unwanted litters before they ever happen?

🐾 You don’t have to be an animal lover to care about spay and neuter. You just have to be a taxpayer.

When unwanted animals are born, somebody eventually pays.

Animal control calls. Stray pickups. Shelter contracts. Housing. Veterinary care. Staff time.

And when municipalities pay those costs, taxpayers help pay the bill.

So why not invest more in preventing the problem instead of continually paying to manage it?

Spay and neuter can mean fewer unwanted litters, fewer animals entering shelters, fewer problems for residents, and less pressure on municipal resources.

🏛️ And if your municipality doesn’t have a solid plan for animal control? That’s where the conversation should start.

🐾 “Why can’t the vet just do it for free?”

Because free to the rescue does not mean free to the veterinary clinic.

Someone is paying.

The veterinarian.
The technician.
The assistant.
The receptionist.
The clinic absorbing the cost.

And every one of those people has a mortgage or rent, groceries, utilities, families and bills waiting at home just like the rest of us.

Yes, veterinary professionals love animals.

And yes, many of them quietly donate far more than we will ever know.

They discount a bill.
They squeeze in one more rescue animal.
They donate an exam, medication, supplies or part of a procedure.
They simply help.

Usually without announcing it.

But they get to decide when and how they give.

Their generosity should be appreciated, not expected.

At PennyFix, we believe the answer to the cost of spay/neuter isn't asking veterinary professionals to work for free.

The answer is finding a way to PAY THEM.

That's why PennyFix raises money to award grants to nonprofit organizations that pay the full cost of spay/neuter surgeries and vaccinations.

And it's why we haven't given up on the idea that started PennyFix in the first place:

ONE PENNY added to every can of dog and cat food sold in America.

One penny isn't much.

Millions of them could change animal welfare.

🐕💘 He’s NEVER tried to get out of the yard before…

Then a female dog nearby goes into heat.

Suddenly, that fence may look a whole lot less convincing.

Dogs can detect the scent of a female in heat from a great distance. Hormones can drive roaming, escaping and behavior that seems completely out of character.

And here’s the thing:

🐾 They don’t care if they’re a good genetic match.
🐾 They don’t know if anyone wants the puppies.
🐾 They don’t understand inherited health problems.
🐾 They only need ONE opportunity.

Nature gave dogs a powerful drive to reproduce.

It gave US the ability to prevent it.

And unlike vaccines, licenses and so many other responsibilities of pet ownership, traditional spay/neuter surgery is once and done. One surgery. A lifetime of pregnancy prevention.
