The Harrisburg Symphony Youth Orchestra, now in its seventy-second season, will open the night under the direction of HSO Associate Conductor Greg Woodbridge. Nearly 100 talented high school musicians from across south-central Pennsylvania will inspire you with their artistry and energy.

Evoking the Romani verbunkos dances of Kodály’s childhood, the piece features a soulful solo clarinet that beckons on a whirl of orchestral energy. In her vivid reimagining of Greek mythos, living composer Stacy Garrop captures the rage of a woman wronged in 𝘉𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘔𝘦𝘥𝘶𝘴𝘢, part of her Mythology Symphony. Garrop’s cinematic storytelling tells the real story of the Gorgon: once a mortal woman, wronged by gods and turned into a symbol of fear. This gripping, dramatic orchestral work reclaims her myth—and gives her power back, utilizing the orchestra’s full range of sound to explore Medusa’s intense sentiments of anger, vulnerability, and horror at her own transformation.

Next on this weekend's program is Richard Strauss' 𝘋𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘩 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘛𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘴𝘧𝘪𝘨𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, a piece he finished when he was only 25 years old, examining what happens in the last moments of life. Strauss didn't write words, he wrote music, which he uses to evoke vivid pictures of nostalgia, suffering, death, and transcendence.
