Harris Ferry Chapter SAR held an incredibly successful cleaning event at Old Hanover Presbyterian Churchyard today. With cooperative weather, about three dozen students from Cumberland Valley School District, and SAR and DAR alike, just about every single tombstone on the grounds were cleaned!
This is the second cleaning event HF has held here. Last year, the fifty some Patriot and veteran stones were cleaned. Today, the stones of their families, friends, and eternal neighbors received the same treatment.
This was an integral part in the cemetery’s preservation. With initial cleanings having taken place, subsequent cleanings will be quicker, more affordable, and require less man power.
Harris Ferry has history at this cemetery, dating back to the 1940s when the chapter approached the nearby church regarding the condition of the site, to 1993 when the surrounding wall was repaired and bronze markers dedicated, to present time when the chapter is making it a mission to keep this site preserved.
Harris Ferry President Lemon and Harrisburg DAR Librarian Miller are newly appointed trustees for the cemetery. Part of their mission is to continue the preservation of the cemetery.
