Women of Color Network, Inc.

Women of Color Network, Inc. We acknowledge these concerns.

National network gathered to establish an entity, to eliminate violence against ALL women and their communities, and to address the unique challenges facing women of color, tribal advocates, and activists within the violence against women movement. The political term “Women of Color” surfaced in the violence against women movement in the late seventies to unify all women experiencing multiple laye

rs of marginalization with race and ethnicity as a common issue. In recent years, the term has been questioned by many for valid reasons related to personal identity and definition, and because the word “color” is not the primary issue for many women with shared ethnicity and race. However, in our work and practice, the term “women of color” is intended to transcend shades of color and is intended to unite those of us with the following shared global experiences with relationship to varied Western and European-based cultures:

Race, Class, Gender-based Oppression and all Intersections

Militarism, Targets of War and Police State

Displacement

Loss of Autonomy

Violence as the Norm

Stolen Legacy

Economic Disenfranchisement

Cultural/Racial Appropriation and Genocide

We welcome all women of Asian/Pacific Islander, Arab/Middle Eastern, Black/African, Native/Indigenous, and Hispanic/Latin descent, and hope you will join us in rising above language for unity.

April is sexual assault awareness month and today is sexual assault awareness day.

Every 68 seconds someone in America becomes a victim to sexual assault. Every 9 seconds, that victim is a child. Only 5 out of every 1000 perpetrators end up convicted. Today sexual assault takes place even online along with harassment, cyber-bullying and exploitation. In most cases, it is someone known.
Sexual Assault can take place anywhere and everywhere. Sexual assault is never the victim’s fault.

Get involved in your community by attending and hosting events to educate, being awareness, and to promote prevention of sexual assault in your communities. Use social media platforms to bring awareness. Donate to your local organizations and most importantly give survivors the space to share their experiences and stories. Wear teal to show your support today. Remember, sexual assault is never the victim’s fault.

📰 Exciting news! 📰

The Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) was included in the fiscal year 2022 omnibus appropriations bill signed by President Biden, which means there will be increases in funding for domestic violence programs! This reauthorization, which includes many provisions, will improve the nation’s response to assist survivors immediate needs to safety and justice. The $17 million dollar increase in the Family Violence Prevention and Services Act (FVPSA) will provide more accessible services for survivors when they need them. A newly allocated $17 million dollars in Culturally Specific Specific Services will provide accessible resources and services to communities of color specifically.

The Women of Color Network, Inc. is beyond grateful for President Biden, the Senate, all representatives, committee members and leaders who have worked relentlessly to make this groundbreaking VAWA Reauthorization 2022 take place! Last but not least WOCN, Inc. is grateful for this reauthorization bill!

Let’s start off with the courageous and talented Maya Angelou for Women’s History Month…

Maya Angelou was traumatized at a very young age when she was sexually assaulted and r***d at the age of eight. After blaming herself for her attacker’s death for nearly five years, by not speaking a word, she decided to use her voice and tell her side of the story.💜

She audaciously shared her story as a survivor and worked relentlessly to become and influential bestselling author, poet, dancer, actress, screenwriter and civil rights activist.💜

Pioneering in American literature and American history, Maya Angelou has left us with remarkable literary works that will teach us lessons for a lifetime.💜

We honor and celebrate Maya Angelou- a phenomenal woman indeed, this Women’s history month and every month for being such a huge inspiration and for paving a pathway for women across the nation as well as around the world.💜💫💫💜
