The Zonta Club held its first planning meeting led by new President Heather Jackson for the new biennium last week. There was lots of discussion and interest in the many service and advocacy projects planned for 2026-27. There were reports from the Committee chairs and the installation of a Board member. See news about Senate Bill 45 passing as an important fight against human trafficking. See explanation below. Congratulations to Greenlight Operation's efforts in getting this passed.

Senate Bill 45 made it through the PA Senate with a 49-1 vote, and is now on the way to the House. Our advocacy work is not done yet, and we still need your help! Now it's time to contact PA House Representatives to let them know this bill matters to you so we don't see this important bill stall.

Why is this bill important in the fight against human trafficking? Senate Bill 45 strikes at the demand for s*x trafficking by increasing penalties on buyers and traffickers rather than victims. It also offers further support to anti-human trafficking efforts by moving prostitution related offenses to the Human Trafficking section of the Title 18 Crimes Code.

Senate Bill 45 Background:

The demand for commercial s*x fuels s*x trafficking. Yet, current law penalizes victims found engaging in prostitution while inadequately imposing accountability on the individuals benefitting from their exploitation. This leaves victims unsupported as traffickers profit from buyers who operate with perceived impunity. This bill will move prostitution related offenses to the Human Trafficking section of Title 18 (Crimes Code) and increases the penalties on traffickers and buyers rather than victims.

The Harrisburg branch of AAUW (American Association of University Women) cordially invites you to attend a reading and concert of the musical, QUILL-ADELPHIA, by local playwright, Cindy Rock Dlugolecki, and local composer, Chris Purcell, on Sunday, July 12, 2026, 2 PM, at Gamut Theater Group, 15 North Fourth Street, Harrisburg, PA. This performance is a fundraiser by the local AAUW branch whose mission is to advance gender equity for women and girls through research, education and advocacy.

QUILL-ADELPHIA centers on the 1787 Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, highlighting the story of Jacob Shallus, the real-life assistant clerk of the Pennsylvania Assembly who penned the final document. It focuses on the middle-class experience, the role of women, and abolition efforts.

The Zonta Club held its May meeting on Wednesday to install the new Officers and give their fundraising gifts to several organizations. The recipients were Greenlight Operation, who has been a partner for 4 years, and two service grants recipients, Mission Central and Gather the Spirit for Justice. The members also brought items for the Bethesda Mission. Outgoing President Kathy received a gift from the membership to honor the work that she has done with like-minded organizations throughout the years. Congratulations to new President Heather and the new Board members.
