SEIU Healthcare Pennsylvania

SEIU Healthcare Pennsylvania PA's largest and fastest-growing union of health care workers. SEIU Healthcare Pennsylvania is the union of caregivers in the Keystone State.

We’re nurses and healthcare workers in hospitals, nursing homes, and state agencies, and direct caregivers for seniors and people with disabilities in their homes. We advocate for the people we care for, we raise the standards of our caring professions, and we fight to make every healthcare job a good, family supporting job. Together we work to protect patient care, expand access to quality health

care for all, and to improve our working conditions. We accomplish these goals by organizing non-union health care workers, driving industry standards in our contracts and fighting for legislation that affects health care in our state. SEIU Healthcare Pennsylvania is affiliated with SEIU Healthcare, part of the Service Employees International Union which represents 2.1 million working people in health care, public services and property services. Pittsburgh's largest NICU should be following nationally accredited, evidence-based staffing standards.

More than three decades of research from AWHONN shows that meeting evidence-based staffing standards in perinatal units improves birthing and health outcomes for mothers and infants.

The nurses and advanced practitioners at Magee believe every birthing person in Pittsburgh, regardless of where they deliver or where their infant gets treatment, should have access to evidence-based care.

That's why, as part of ongoing union negotiations, nurses and advanced practitioners have proposed AWHONN staffing standards for all perinatal units at Magee hospital.

UPMC has the resources to invest in this standard of care, and nurses believe doing so will have a positive impact on women's and family health across the region.

UPMC Magee-Womens was the most profitable individual hospital in Pennsylvania last year according to the most recent hospital fiscal transparency report from the Pennsylvania Healthcare Cost Containment Council.

This news comes as Magee nurses and advanced practitioners — who formed their union last fall — are negotiating their first contract with the hopes of elevating patient care and making nursing a more sustainable profession.

“The 1,000 nurses and advanced practitioners at Magee take deep pride in the success of our hospital, and call on UPMC to use our immense profits — which we helped generate — to invest in evidence-based, national staffing standards. These standards are urgently needed to address the infant and maternal health crisis, and the crisis facing the nursing profession.”

Nearly 60% of Pennsylvania hospitals maintained operating margins above 4% in 2025, though southwestern region hospitals outperformed statewide averages.

"The study by Penn Nursing’s Center for Health Outcomes and Policy Research in Philadelphia found that capping the number of patients that a nurse cares for at any one time at 4-to-1 would reduce hospital stays in Pennsylvania by 70,000 days annually...

Each additional patient per nurse was associated with higher odds of dying — 8% higher odds of death within 30 days of leaving the hospital — 4% higher odds of being readmitted and longer hospital stays."

Yesterday, we stood with a coalition of organizations from across PA and said what so many healthcare workers know firsthand: When healthcare is underfunded, the quality of care suffers.

"The people I work with every day cannot afford more cuts. Ordinary people already carry enough of the load. It's time for the wealthiest corporations in the world to help carry it too."

We're calling on PA lawmakers to pass the Digital Ad Tax on Big Tech. Google, Meta, Amazon, and TikTok make billions of dollars targeting Pennsylvanians with digital ads. They should pay their fair share so our communities have the resources we need to fund quality care.

Over a hundred union healthcare workers and our union siblings are in Harrisburg to talk to elected leaders about taxing billionaires to fund healthcare. Nursing home workers are also fired up to call for predictable funding for nursing homes and support for the Nursing Home Accountability Act, which would bring PA closer to states with strong ownership regulations like Ohio and Virginia 💪
