Union nurses are working together to raise standards across the entire profession, because we have known for a long time what healthcare executives are now forced to acknowledge:

“There is no shortage of nurses in this country,” Jeff Doucette, chief clinical officer at Qualtrics told The Wall Street Journal. “There’s a shortage of nurses that want to work in the current environment.”

TODAY: A historic, county-wide paid parental leave policy was officially signed into law by Allegheny County Executive Sara Innamorato The law requires employers with 15 or more employees provide at least 12 weeks of paid parental leave to new parents following a birth, adoption, or still birth.

Union nurses and healthcare workers are proud of the role we played in helping to advocate for this paid parental leave bill, which we believe is crucial to building healthy families and a thriving economy for working people in Allegheny County.

“When Magee nurses launched this campaign on Mother's Day, I said that what brought us together was a combination of love and rage. Love for our children, our patients and our community. Rage that so many parents are forced to choose between caring for their newborn babies and putting food on the table,” said Lucy Rose Ruccio, a neonatal nurse practitioner at Magee-Womens Hospital in Pittsburgh.

“Today, that love and rage have turned into hope. Hope that more parents will bring their babies home without worrying about missing a paycheck. Hope that more mothers will now have the time they need to recover from childbirth. And hope that our community will be healthier and stronger because of what we've accomplished together.

This victory belongs to everyone: nurses, parents, workers, community advocates, and elected leaders who refused to give up. We worked tirelessly, and the result will benefit generations. I'm so proud that my children will grow up in a community where working people come together to prove that change is possible.”

“I hope [this is] one of the things that will maybe someday be recognized as an early example of when things started to change.”

Last night, after months of advocacy led by union nurses in Pittsburgh alongside parents and community members, Allegheny County Council voted 11 to 4 to pass 12 weeks of paid parental leave — the first county-level paid leave policy in the nation.

Nurses and other supporters of this policy say this will help to support the retention of new parents in the workforce, while improving outcomes for infants and families.

After watching parents return to work while their babies were still in intensive care, Pittsburgh nurses fought to secure the nation's first countywide 12-week paid parental leave policy.

After months of advocacy led by Magee Nurses and Advanced Practitioners, alongside other union healthcare workers, parents, and members of the community, Allegheny County Council voted (11-4) to pass a first-of-its-kind paid parental leave legislation to support families and infants.

“When we first launched this campaign on Mother’s Day, we had no idea how far we’d get. What we did know was how badly families needed more paid parental leave, and how much this policy could help address the nursing shortage by attracting and retaining more healthcare workers to Allegheny County,” said Lucy Rose Ruccio, a neonatal nurse practitioner at Magee as she addressed the crowd holding her own 6-week old baby.

“Today, I can say with confidence that because of our efforts: our county will be a better place to live, work, raise children, and receive healthcare.”

After months of relentless advocacy from union nurses, healthcare workers, and parents across the region, Allegheny County Council has officially voted to pass a first-of-its-kind paid parental leave legislation aimed at supporting working parents across the region.

The policy provides at least 12 weeks to employees working for a company with 15 or more employees for at least 6 months, and will cover an overwhelming majority of the regions healthcare workforce.

Allegheny County Council voted to mandate up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave for workers at businesses with 15 or more employees, the first local policy in the U.S.

People across Pennsylvania are fed up with the rising cost of healthcare.

NEPA local, Donna Gerhardt, authored this letter in response to her skyrocketing premiums that still fall short of covering the care she needs and why it relates to the election this November.

"When $1,495 per month can’t buy the confidence to know you’ll receive care when unwell, it’s clear our system is fundamentally broken. This November, voters like me will be looking to candidates across Pennsylvania for solutions. Are they ready to provide them?

Before we vote, we want to hear what they plan to do about a system where paying $1,495 a month still leaves people hesitating to seek care."
