Federal Deadline for Airline Accommodations
Air travel should be safe, dignified, and accessible for everyone β including passengers who use wheelchairs and other mobility devices.
The U.S. Department of Transportationβs wheelchair rule was created to strengthen protections under the Air Carrier Access Act and address barriers that many travelers with disabilities still face, including unsafe transfers, mishandled wheelchairs, delayed assistance, and poor communication.
The rule sets stronger expectations for airlines, including safe and dignified assistance, improved employee training, better handling of wheelchairs and scooters, and clearer responsibilities when mobility devices are damaged or delayed.
For wheelchair users, a mobility device is not just luggage β it is freedom, independence, and daily access to the community.
While some enforcement provisions are still under federal review, the message is clear: accessible air travel matters. People with disabilities deserve to travel with dignity, safety, and equality.
At Thrive Center for Independent Living, we believe accessibility should never be treated as optional.
