Green Urban Initiative

Green Urban Initiative GUI is no longer active. A few years back.... the city decided to sell the land to developers.... to increase their taxable revenue.

Unfortunately these lots have not been developed and sit idle. Thanks to all that contributed.

Hi everyone, Just want to update you on what's going on. I am waiting to meet with the developer to discuss specifics for the garden. Once we have agreed, I will share that plan with everyone.
Items we are discussing:
- contract that entitles us to garden on the property. What terms can we agree on?
- define a schedule - are there plans
-Layout - water tank next to the 3 story apartment building on 4th st?
-electronic copy of property plans for our records and also to use as a plot plan
- items to be purchased for the new garden
-geo-fabric as a buffer to cover 16x240 ft space
-chicken wire, 3 ft high, buried half in the ground for ground hog barrier approx 520 ft
-post to support the chicken wire (@ 8 ft = 64 posts, 3ft high
-gates for the chicken wire (we can make something)
-soil (leaf mulch) to fill the boxes and lot, approximately 1 ft deep over the geofabric.(this would be about 150 yds) We have about 60 yds in the existing gardens
- another storage shed or 2
- wood chips to place between boxes (we have about 20+ boxes) I was thinking there may be a lot of wood chips from the trees being cut down. If they could be saved, that would be great.
-Cherry tree; there is a cheery tree on 3rd st that we would like to move to the new garden.
-Funds to help build a new garden

If anyone has any other items they want to add, please email me at [email protected]

We're moving.....
The land that marion st and 3rd st gardens were located on has been sold to developers. I spoke with the developers of the 3rd st garden and they have provided us with a permanent home as part of their plan. The gardens will be located behind the current 3rd st gardens between Logan and 4th. It's roughly 16 x 240 ft.
It will be a combination of individual plots and a large community garden.
If anyone is interested in planning the gardens......please let me know. We plan on starting the first week of March.
Thank you universe!

All over the world, small farmers are being forced off their land to make way for corporate agriculture, writes GRAIN - and it's justified by the need to 'feed the world'. But it's the small farmers that are the most productive, and the more their land is grabbed, the more global hunger increases. W...
