UPDATE:
It is with deep regret that the Historic Harrisburg Association announces the cancellation of the Landmark Tour: William Penn High School, originally scheduled for Monday, May 18. Despite the best efforts from Historic Harrisburg and the Harrisburg School District, extenuating circumstances and logistical issues have made it impossible for the tour to go on as planned.

We know how much this landmark means to the community, especially its former alumni and faculty, and others who wanted to have one last opportunity to see the interior before its demolition. Like so many of you, we are disappointed with this outcome, but completely understand the concerns that have arisen or have been raised by all parties involved.

Historic Harrisburg thanks the community for its understanding and continued interest in the campus.

Announcement: Our 2026 Preservation Priorities underwent a major mid-year update in when the HHA Board of Directors approved two recommendations of the Preservation Committee: to add the former Harrisburg Midtown Arts Center (“H·MAC”) to the “top five” on the basis of its uncertain future upon its permanent closure (pictured here in the 1950s when it was the Jewish Community Center); and to move the Riverside Firehouse (pictured here in 1923) from the top five to the “watch list” on the basis of progress made by the City in readying it for sale, which HHA has long advocated. We hope to see both of these buildings soon purchased by responsible owners who will preserve them for future generations.

Historic Harrisburg’s “2026 Preservation Celebration and A Toast to the Alexanders!” will occur at the Whitaker on Thursday, May 14, from 6:00 to 9:00 PM. This year, HHA honors William H. and Marion C. Alexander and their son Charles, whose impact on the built environment spreads across the disciplines of construction, fundraising, and architectural design. The event will be held in the Kunkel Gallery and will include a heavy hors d’oeuvre reception, a silent auction, and a presentation of Historic Harrisburg’s 2026 Preservation Awards.

On this day, 120 years ago, the Market Street Bridge was dedicated in a 4 p.m. ceremony hosted by the Civic Club of Harrisburg (pictured here). Lauded at the time as the "only formal city entrance in this country," the two columns from the old Capitol Building flanked the abutment in "the happiest choice," an homage to the river being the "ancient 'highway' of Harrisburg." Speaker Lyman Gilbert of the Civic Club praised "the duties of citizenship, upon which the welfare of this city must always depend." We think those duties are just as important today as they were then.

The Historic Harrisburg Association was honored to host a government relations event this evening, welcoming Mayor Wanda Williams; Senator Patty Kim; Representative Justin Fleming; Representative Nate Davidson; John Hershey; Eric Hagarty; and Ryan Unger to our building.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to share the importance of historic preservation and to highlight the work we do to strengthen our city and surrounding communities through preservation, thoughtful urban development, and a deep respect for our shared history.

Holding claim as the first midrise building on Front Street, the Parkway Apartments were home to many prominent city residents and maintained a waiting list from their opening in 1920. The management company was initially led by John H. Troup Sr., a Market Square music merchandiser, who was also a Parkway resident and would later acquire the building outright. The Philadelphia architects Baily & Bassett designed the structure so that each of its 20 suites would have a view of the Susquehanna River. Although the Parkway incorporated a residential-style setback (honoring the gentlemen’s agreements embedded in neighboring deeds along Front Street), it nonetheless set a precedent for future larger-scale development to coexist with the riverfront mansions.
