This morning, Widener Law Commonwealth OUTLaw had the privilege of hosting a Name Change Clinic dedicated to supporting members of our community in navigating the legal process with dignity and care.

We are proud to play a small role in helping individuals take meaningful steps toward aligning their legal identity with who they are. Events like this reflect our ongoing commitment to advocacy, access to justice, and community impact.

Thank you to everyone who volunteered their time and expertise to make this clinic possible—and to those who trusted us to be part of their journey.

Nex Benedict, was a 16 year old 2 Spirit non-binary child of Chahta (Choctaw) heritage living in Owasso, Oklahoma. They admired nature and had a devoted love of cats, especially their cat, Zeus. They were a student and an avid rock music listener. They loved The Walking Dead and video games like Ark and Minecraft. They were a gifted artist who enjoyed drawing, reading, and conjuring up their own cooking recipes. They were warm, kind, and always searched for the best in people. They were all of these things and more. They were going some place, they were so free. Nex had a light in them that was so big, they had so many dreams. We want their light to keep shining for everyone. That light was so big and bright and beautiful, and want everyone to remember Nex that way. Today, we think about Nex Benedict and so many of the other 2spirit, Trans, and gender non-conforming children stolen by violence. End the violence

Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day!
Early LGBTQ+ activists (though they didn’t use that acronym at the time) adopted many of the civil rights movement’s strategies and they relied on much of the foundation laid by Black civil rights activists.
The LGBTQ+ owes a lot of great foundations and achievements to Martin Luther King Jr. and the civil rights movement.

Happy Coming Out Day!
National Coming Out Day (NCOD) is an annual LGBTQ+ awareness day observed on October 11, to support anyone "coming out of the closet".
First celebrated in the United States in 1988, the initial idea was grounded in the feminist and gay liberation spirit of the personal being political, and the emphasis on the most basic form of activism being coming out to family, friends, and colleagues, and living life as an openly LGBTQ+
The founders' belief was that homophobia and transphobia thrive in an atmosphere of silence and ignorance and that once people know that they have loved ones who are LGBTQ+, they are far less likely to maintain homophobic, transphobic, or oppressive views.
Whether you're out or not, an ally or q***r, OutLaw and other student organizations are here to support you on your journey.
