Harrisburg City Firefighters Local 428 is working with 2nd Battalion, 25th Marines of Harrisburg to host Toys for Tots in all for the city’s firehouses we are asking if you are able to please donate a New unwrapped toy.

Starting today, the Fire Administration has informed the Local and its members that staffing will be reduced from 13 on duty firefighters to 11. We were effectively lied to back in September by both City and Fire Admin that staffing levels would not be affected with the closure of Station 6 (See the article: https://www.cityoflancasterpa.gov/blog/city-of-lancaster-announces-changes-to-fire-and-police-bureaus/ ).

We may burn to death tonight… another family or some innocent children sleeping may die due to poor staffing levels tonight — contact city hall and express your concerns. As we slip back into an era we thought was long gone, Local 319 will continue to fight for your safety as we did 15 years ago, just like when we had this billboard installed beside Station 3 on E. King St.

Local 428 members and DLA Rescue 69 along side Lamar Advertising are conducting high angle rope rescue drills at HACC focusing on the rescue of utility and sign workers. Members are constantly training to better serve the people of Harrisburg and the surrounding municipalities.

The Harrisburg Bureau of Fire’s 2023 Harrisburg JCC Corporate Clash Team. It was a hard fought battle, but ultimately we came in 2nd place by only a mere 20 points behind The Susquehanna Twp. Police Department. Regardless, it was a fun time had by all. Thank you to all the teams who participated!

Arbitration was yesterday. The Local made a strong case for why we want certain items from our impasse list. The City is still holding on to the fact that the City is in “Distressed Status” even though the most recent Act 47 plan expired in 2021. The Economist that the Local hired pointed out the trends in the job market and inflation. He also noted that the City has plenty of money in its coffers. It’s a shame that we couldn’t reach a deal during negotiations. Now it’s in the hands of the Arbitrators. The city wants to keep Firefighters on 2 different pay scales even though they are doing the exact same job with the same hazards all because the City was fiscally irresponsible years ago. It’s time that they make things right. The Local used “real” numbers with supporting documents. Everything we asked for the city made up the most extreme numbers possible. Claiming that the Local was trying to bankrupt the City. That is not the case. The Local wants all of its members to be paid the same at the old pay scale.

In a report aired by abc27 News today, Harrisburg City Controller Charlie DeBrunner stated,"We're out of debt". Maybe now IAFF Local 428 (City Firefighter's Union) will be able to sit down with City Officials and negotiate fair raises for its members without being told that the city is financially strapped. The Mayor stated in October of 2022 that the City of Harrisburg is the financially strongest it's been in decades, however, when the Union meets with City Officials we are constantly being advised the "City is financially stressed". Which is It?! Local 428 offered millions in savings to the City throughout Act 47. Now it is time to make things right. We give our all everyday for the residents, visitors, and surrounding municipalities. Now the City wants more - offering pay cuts to half of our membership. Meanwhile inflationary pressure is at an all time high and they still want more from the Firefighters. Currently Local 428 Firefighters are serving the city without a current contract and will continue to do so 24/7/365. All we want is to be treated fairly...
