πŸ”Ή June is National Gun Violence Awareness Month

πŸ”Ή Gun violence is a public health emergency per the US Surgeon General and Summer weekends in Central Pennsylvania are overwhelmingly burdened by such tragedies.

πŸ”Ή Yesterday, local leaders for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the City of Harrisburg & Dauphin County, met to assess what is working and what is still needed to combat the deadly violence.

πŸ”Ή Solutions discussed included more mental health care, gun buybacks, police coverage and support for victims.

In addition to Senator Vincent Hughes, some of the other leaders in attendance were Rep. Patty Kim, Dauphin County Commissioners Hartwick and Douglas, Lt. Governor Austin Davis, Harrisburg Bureau of Police Chief Tom Carter, Local Prosecutors, and other community stakeholders.

We love participating in community events! On Sat, June 8th we joined Lingo Memorial Church for their 100th Anniversary Block Party. It was a great day!

We gave out 100 backpacks, along with school supplies and educational books.

We also provided Juneteenth activity books, crayons, pencils, bookmarks, and pens.

We were also able to share information about what the NAACP stands for and how to become a member, as well as details about our upcoming Freedom Fund Dinner in October. We'll be celebrating 70 years of Culture, Community & Power at our Platinum Jubilee on Sat, October 12th.

Many thanks to our Executive Committee & Members for their participation. Shout out to Mr. & Mrs. Abreham Kittel, Ms. Nikki Howard, Dave Smith, President Allen, & Mrs. Alicia Allen.

🎢 President Jimmy Carter declared June to be back in 1979.

🎡 The month celebrates the African American musical influences that comprise an essential part of our nation's treasured cultural heritage. Black music is rooted in African rhythms & the experiences of slavery & struggle in America.

🎢 In 2000, the U.S. House of Representatives officially named the month African American Music Appreciation Month & President Bill Clinton signed the first presidential proclamation recognizing it.

🎡 Black music has influenced many genres, including gospel and rock and roll, and has played an essential role in shaping American history and the Civil Rights movement.
