Cherovise Mashburn Bird, affectionately known as “Mama Bird” or “Granny,” passed away peacefully at her home in Harpersville, Alabama, on August 13, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.
Cherovise was the heart of her community, known far and wide as one of the most welcoming and loving ladies you could ever meet — and one who could cook for an entire county. For over 20 years, she served the faculty and students of Vincent Schools in the lunchroom where she fed countless students, never turning anyone away, even if they had no money. Her home-cooked meals were so renowned that county employees would drive just to eat in her lunchroom. Even years later, people across the community still ask about Mrs. Bird, remembering her as the best cook who made the most unforgettable rolls and cookies.
Her selfless spirit made everyone feel special. Cherovise loved giving gifts, and her family was her greatest joy. She attended every event possible for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, her eyes lighting up with pride as she watched them fulfill their dreams. Her home was always warm and welcoming, with food ready for anyone who visited. She loved camping, gardening, and yard sales, and she lived by the words of 1 John 4:19: “We love because He first loved us.”
Cherovise’s quick wit and joyful personality never faded. Even at 90 years old, she loved to make people laugh, her radiant smile brightening every room. She had a gift for making everyone feel included and special. Heaven is sweeter today because she is there. She often shared her faith, making it known that her name is written in the Lamb’s Book of Life, and she prayed that all would be able to say the same. In her home, a preacher’s voice and Gospel music were always present, reflecting the deep faith that guided her life.
Cherovise will be greatly missed by her family, friends, and all who were blessed to know her. Everyone who crossed her path is better for having done so.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, August 16, 2025 at 10:00 AM at the First Baptist Church of Harpersville. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 AM. Mr. Adam Spates and Rev. Matthew Britt will be presiding. She will be laid to rest at Harpersville City Cemetery.
