“We will proceed to the Ferry.”

With these words, abolitionist John Brown launched an attack on the U.S. Armory at Harpers Ferry—an event that helped ignite the Civil War. On Friday, October 16th, follow in the footsteps of Brown’s small “Provisional Army” during this solemn five-mile walk from his headquarters in Washington County, Maryland, to Harpers Ferry. This rarely offered experience invites participants to consider how acts of moral conviction have influenced the nation’s course across generations. In addition to the processional walk led by retired park Chief Historian Dennis Frye, this event includes shuttle service to Brown’s headquarters at the Kennedy Farm, presentations, music, and an authentic period meal.

Registration is required for this event due to limited space: https://www.zeffy.com/en-US/ticketing/proceed-to-the-ferry-john-browns-march-commemoration.

What's in a name?

in 1963, President John F. Kennedy signed a bill changing Harpers Ferry National Monument to Harpers Ferry National Historical Park.

But what does that mean?

There are more than 400 units in the national park system, and the diversity of the parks is reflected in the variety of titles given to them. These include such titles as national park, national preserve, national monument, national memorial, national historic site, national seashore, and national battlefield park.

In recent years, national historic site has been the title most commonly applied by Congress in authorizing the addition of such areas to the National Park System. A wide variety of titles—national military park, national battlefield park, national battlefield site, and national battlefield—has been used for areas associated with American military history. But other areas like national monuments and national historical parks may include features associated with military history. National historical parks are commonly areas of greater physical extent and complexity than national historic sites.

On May 16th, we take the time to honor those who are currently serving in all branches of the U.S. military. Their service and dedication to our country are truly inspiring. Although not a public holiday, National Armed Forces Day was started in 1949 as a way of replacing the various separate celebrations for each of the branches.

While paying tribute to our current armed forces, you can visit and consider the impact of the past military actions that occurred here and the different branches that participated. that in May of 1862, the Union forces constructed naval artillery batteries on Maryland Heights? The guns had to be transported from Washington, D. C. in an effort to protect the town from the threatening Confederate forces under General Stonewall Jackson, as they marched through the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. It is well worth the hike up the Maryland Heights Trail to see what remains of the earthworks and ammunition pits used by the roughly 300 marines and sailors who initially manned it!

Today, we salute all branches of the U. S. military, and we thank you for your service!
