Siesta Sanctuary

Siesta Sanctuary Assisted living for retired parrots ~ Licensed by the State of Maine ~ A 501 ( c )( 3) Non –profit corporation How did we get into doing this?

First of all, both of us are animal lovers from a very early age. When we met in college, we both had the same goal: live in the country, have a small farm and animals. By luck we found this place in Harmony in 1976 and have been here ever since. We quickly became known locally for taking in animals that needed a home--dogs, cats, goats, horses, an aquarium--you get the picture! And the parrots?

🤣 I (Marg) have been in love with parrots since I was 6 when my parents took me to Busch Gardens to be enthralled by the cockatoo show. After our children were grown we, joined Parrot Place, an organization that emphasizes education of prospective parrot owners. We received baby parrots, hand raised them and sold them to these customers. It did not take long for the word to get out that we had birds; people began calling to see if we would take in their "aunt's parrot because she was going into a nursing home." We soon discovered the need for a parrot rescue, as some of our educated customers even brought back parrots as their lives changed. We stopped selling, and started Siesta Sanctuary with the mission to give parrots in need a permanent home.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY 🤔

Please, please don't take a parrot into your home if you can't offer a lifetime commitment to these beautiful, long-lived creatures.

They're not playthings for a practice run while you wait to start a family, and then disposable.

If you're elderly - what will happen to that cute baby bird when you die? It's almost certainly going to outlive you.

What will happen when your sweet, cuddly bird bites you - as it definitely will - or when it starts to tear up your lovely home?

Not all parrots are like the cute, cuddly (often fake AI-generated) videos you see on Facebook and YouTube.

Will you love it just the same if it isn't?
PLEASE LISTEN...
