Supporting the whole scholar is integral to how we show up and care for children at Democracy Prep. 💛

This year, we are strengthening how social emotional learning shows up across our classrooms through RULER, which focuses on five core skills: Recognizing, Understanding, Labeling, Expressing, and Regulating emotions.

Scholars will also encounter tools like classroom charters and Mood Meters that help make these skills part of everyday school life.

Because SEL shows up in real moments: recognizing frustration before it becomes conflict, finding the words to ask for help, listening with empathy, navigating a difficult interaction, or regulating emotions so you can refocus and keep going.

These are skills scholars can carry into college, their careers, their relationships, and their communities.

We are proud to continue investing in practices that help every scholar feel known, heard, valued, and supported as their full self.

One of the greatest joys of a new school year is seeing our scholars return with new goals, fresh energy, and endless possibilities ahead.

This year, we are focused on accelerating academic growth, strengthening our partnership with families, and continuing to build joyful, safe, and supportive schools where every scholar can thrive.

The year is especially meaningful as we celebrate Democracy Prep’s 20th anniversary and honor the scholars, families, alumni, educators, and communities who have shaped our story.

Something new is coming for Democracy Prep families. 🎓

This year, we are proud to launch Democracy Prep Parent University, a yearlong learning experience designed to support parents and caregivers through practical workshops, trusted resources, and meaningful community connections.

Throughout the year, families will have opportunities to learn about financial wellness, homeownership, college planning and FAFSA, career development, family relationships, and more.

Participants can also earn credits toward the Democracy Prep Parent University Certificate in Family Leadership, culminating in a special celebration of their commitment to learning and growth.

Our families are essential partners in scholar success, and we are excited to invest, learn, and grow alongside them.

A huge congratulations to Principal Katelyn Derry of Democracy Prep Harlem High School 💐

This summer, Principal Derry traveled to Korea to participate in the International Conference for Korean Language Educators, joining educators and leaders from around the world.

While there, she received the 2026 Minister of Education Award from the Korean government at the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea, an extraordinary honor awarded to only five individuals worldwide.

We are incredibly proud to celebrate Principal Derry and the dedication, expertise, and passion she brings to our scholars and our Korean language program every day. Her recognition speaks to the incredible educators within our community and the impact of a program that continues to create meaningful opportunities for scholars and educators far beyond the classroom.

Back to school is almost here and before the school year begins, families should mark two important dates: Prep Academy on August 24 for all new scholars and scholars entering kindergarten, sixth grade, and ninth grade, followed by the first day of school for all scholars on August 26. 

As families prepare, we’re sharing a few ways to help scholars return feeling confident, supported, and ready to learn.

This year also marks Democracy Prep’s 20th anniversary, making the start of school an especially meaningful moment for our community. As we begin another year together, our mission remains clear: Work Hard. Go to College. Change the World.

We’re excited for another year of learning, growth, joy, and possibility across our school communities.

Allow Her to Reintroduce Herself💐

Her name is Tameka Royal, and she is the CEO of Democracy Prep Public Schools.

But her story with Democracy Prep did not begin with this title. Years before returning as CEO, Tameka had already experienced the power of this mission, the strength of this community, and the unwavering belief in what our scholars can achieve.

She returned with a new perspective, deeper experience, and a clear commitment to advocacy, education, equity, joy, hope, and creating a true sense of belonging for every scholar and family we serve.

As Democracy Prep celebrates its 20th anniversary, our Allow Me to Reintroduce Myself series is honoring the people who left, grew, and ultimately found their way back home.

In our first conversation, Tameka reflects on her first chapter with Democracy Prep, what called her back, and the future she is helping our community build together.
