MAPS Media Institute - Fort Belknap

MAPS Media Institute - Fort Belknap MAPS - Fort Belknap is a free, year-round media arts program serving youth in Harlem, Hays and Dodson.

Students create films, music, podcasts, and design projects that share community stories and strengthen cultural connections. MAPS Media Institute, an arts educational nonprofit, began in the Bitterroot Valley in 2004 to empower youth through free, professional media arts education. In 2019, MAPS expanded to Helena with a second year-round program and opened its third permanent site in Fort Belkna

p in 2024. The Fort Belknap program grew from nearly a decade of collaboration. Since 2016, MAPS has facilitated media projects with local youth, earning trust and endorsement from the Fort Belknap Tribal Council, cultural leaders, families, and three public school districts. With this community support, Fort Belknap became MAPS' third year-round site, providing steady opportunities for creativity, mentorship, and skill-building. Based out of our Harlem studio and extending to schools and community spaces across Fort Belknap, MAPS engages students ages 13-18 in filmmaking, music production, podcasting, graphic design, and emerging technologies. Beyond technical training, MAPS offers a place where young people can express themselves, build confidence, and share their stories. Projects connect students, elders, and families in creating media that reflects Fort Belknap - from cultural traditions to contemporary life. Their work is shared across Montana and frequently earns recognition at regional and national levels. Follow us to see what Fort Belknap youth are creating next.

We love sharing finished pieces, but some of our favorite moments happen before anyone steps into the recording booth.

This is the analog side of MAPS: the ideation stage, the writers room, the table read. Sticky notes, scripts, pencils, and a whole lot of creative energy.

This is Week 2 of the MAPS-Fort Belknap Summer Program, and these artists are in the writers room: crafting original radio PSAs about making positive choices and staying healthy.

A big shout out to Fort Belknap CDC TAIDPP for partnering with MAPS on this project. This is another example of what it looks like when young people have the opportunity to share their skills and creativity to strengthen their community.

Summer Program runs every Monday and Tuesday through June 30. For more info contact Craig Todd at [email protected] l (406) 690 - 2524 or click the link to enroll: https://mapsmediainstitute.com/programs/fort-belknap-indian-community/enroll

"Better Days" is here!

Week 1 of the MAPS Fort Belknap Summer Program delivered something special. In just two days, the artists wrote, recorded, and produced an original song that hits close to home.

"Better Days" is about the daily stress we face in life and how we can manage it by staying positive, holding on to hope, and believing that better days are always ahead.

Written, recorded, and produced entirely by MAPS Fort Belknap Music students under the direction of Dean Doney Jr. 🎶

Enjoy and share the love!

PS: Summer Program runs every Monday and Tuesday, 10am – 4pm in June. Know a young person in grades 7–12 who should be here? https://mapsmediainstitute.com/programs/fort-belknap-indian-community/enroll or contact Craig Todd at [email protected], (406) 690-2524.

Our hearts are full today.

Thank you to the Fort Belknap Tiwahe for welcoming MAPS to host the unveiling of the first round of Elder stories and portraits as part of the Tiwahe Elders Narrative Memoir Project.

Tiwahe, meaning family in the Lakota language, reflects the deep interconnectedness of all living things and the responsibility to care for one another.

This gathering honored Elders whose stories, wisdom, and lived experiences continue to guide and strengthen the community. Through this project, MAPS supported portrait sessions and documentation, helping preserve and uplift these powerful narratives for future generations.

It was an inspiring afternoon of sharing a meal, listening, and celebrating legacy. Thank you to the Tiwahe team for your trust and partnership. All of us at MAPS are honored to work alongside you in this important work.
