Today in Black History Month, we remember and celebrate the extraordinary life and legacy of Roberta Flack.

πŸ’” It is with deep sadness that we acknowledge her recent passing on February 24, 2025.

Her voice, a velvety masterpiece, gifted us timeless classics like 'Killing Me Softly with His Song' and 'The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face.' Beyond her musical brilliance, she was a passionate advocate for music education, leaving an indelible mark on the world.

Her strength through her battle with ALS was also inspiring. Though we mourn her loss, we celebrate the incredible impact she had on music and culture. Her music will live on forever.

Please share your favorite Roberta Flack memory or song in the comments.

The African American Tea Ceremony

The African American tea ceremony, often overlooked, holds a significant place in Black history.

These gatherings, especially popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, were vital spaces for community building, intellectual discussion, artistic expression, and even political organizing.

Black women, in particular, used these events to create their own refined social spheres and assert their agency.

This rich tradition continues to influence Black social gatherings, showcasing a powerful legacy of culture and resilience.

Bayard Rustin: The Architect of the March on Washington

Today, we celebrate Bayard Rustin, a brilliant strategist, organizer, and civil rights activist whose contributions often remain in the shadows despite their monumental impact.

Rustin was a key architect of the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, a pivotal moment in the Civil Rights Movement.

A master of logistics and coalition-building, Rustin expertly coordinated the massive event, bringing together diverse groups and ensuring its peaceful and impactful ex*****on.

He worked tirelessly behind the scenes, navigating complex logistics, securing permits, and unifying various factions.

While Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered the iconic "I Have a Dream" speech, it was Rustin's organizational genius that made the march possible.

Beyond the March, Rustin was a lifelong advocate for social justice. He was a passionate believer in nonviolent direct action and dedicated his life to fighting for equality.

He faced discrimination not only for his race but also for his sexual orientation, yet he remained steadfast in his commitment to justice for all.

Rustin's legacy reminds us that change requires not only powerful speeches but also meticulous planning and tireless dedication.

Today, let's recognize Bayard Rustin, the unsung hero whose strategic brilliance helped shape the course of the Civil Rights Movement.
