Nydia Blas works in the space between memory and myth.

Her photographs don't document — they reconstruct. Drawing from family history, Black feminine experience, and the surreal, she builds images that exist somewhere between what happened and what's still being carried.

Her work is in Sacred Roots, Issue No. 4.

Tsoku Maela uses his own body as the primary site of inquiry.

His practice — photography, digital media, moving image — navigates identity, mental health, ancestral knowledge, and the spiritual dimensions of African selfhood. His series Abstract Peaces used self-portraiture to confront and destigmatise mental illness. His work since has continued to move between the personal and the philosophical, the body and what lies beyond it.

He is the cover artist of Sacred Roots, Issue No. 4 — and the right note to close on.

Carla Jay Harris starts with a photograph and builds an environment.

Her practice — photography, installation, collage, drawing — investigates how psychological space shapes who we understand ourselves to be. History is never static in her work. It's a room you can walk into, rearrange, and leave differently than you entered.

Her work is in Sacred Roots, Issue No. 4.

Mayowa Nwadike works in charcoal and acrylic, but what he's really examining is the space between what we show and what we carry.

His portraits centre Black emotional life — vulnerability not as weakness, but as the precise place where identity actually lives. Quiet compositions with a lot underneath them.

"The mother never forgets her child."

Delita Martin's work centres Black women — not as subjects to be observed, but as vessels of spiritual and historical memory. drawing, she constructs what she calls veilscapes: environments where the physical and spiritual exist in the same space.

She doesn't make portraits. She builds sites of remembrance.

"Black women have historically been marginalized and made small—physically and symbolically—so I work large to shift the power dynamics in the room."
