Our Fishing Club wrapped up its final meeting of the year yesterday! Throughout April, members learned about different types of lures and practiced various casting techniques. To finish the season, we put those skills to the test with a trip to Martins Fork Lake, where students had the chance to fish.

We had several members catch fish—some even reeling in their very first catch! It was a great experience and a fun way to end the year.

If you’re interested in joining, give our office a call at 606-573-4464. Open to youth ages 9–14!

At the end of April, we celebrated the graduates of the Harlan County 4-H Teen Leadership Academy. Throughout the program, these youth engaged in a wide range of experiences, including visits with local and state government, learning about news and media, and completing community service projects. They also developed and delivered a speech or demonstration at Communications Day, served in elected officer roles, created resumes, and participated in mock job interviews.

We are incredibly proud of each of these graduates and appreciate the time, effort, and dedication they invested in the program. We look forward to seeing all they accomplish in the future and hope they continue to stay involved with 4-H throughout the rest of their high school careers.

Last month, we presented our “Dollars and Sense” financial management program to 8th-grade students at Rosspoint Elementary and Green Hills Elementary. During the program, students were given a $200 budget and tasked with making real-life spending decisions based on responsibilities such as housing, food, pets, and other expenses.

Through this hands-on activity, students explored the difference between needs and wants, gained a better understanding of financial responsibility, and saw firsthand how quickly money can be spent. It was a great opportunity to introduce practical money management skills they can carry with them into the future.
