For a family whom lost everything in a house fire recently.

They have a place to live now but are still in need a few pots and pans, a laundry basket or two, cleaning supplies, vacuum, something to mop with. Toys for elementary age boys and one girl would also be appreciated as they lost all of that as well.

A basketball goal has been donated for the older boys but we are also looking for bikes for the kids to be able to ride as the weather is getting warmer. The kids ages are…Boys 16, 15, 13, 8, 6 and an 11 yr old girl.

If you feel led to donate any of the items above, May be dropped off at 504 Chad Street Loyall and we will get them to the family.

We’re thrilled to share this exciting news with you! A small number of public libraries in Kentucky were chosen to receive a grant this year from New Allies, a Youth Villages initiative. Your Harlan County Public Library system is one of those lucky few! Our libraries have always been here as helpful resources for families across our county; we will be using this opportunity to further that goal with our FREE Safe Summers project.

Safe Summers will provide beneficial resources for parents and guardians who are raising kids of all ages. Don’t miss out on these important topics!

Our first night will focus on Internet safety. This could be useful for parents whose children are of any age, but especially for preteens and teens who use devices more frequently.

The second night will focus on the importance of fathers or male figures in the life of a child, with moving stories from our guest speakers.

The third night will provide information from a local pediatrician on the health of your child from birth and beyond. It will then be followed by a chance to connect with valuable local resources available in our community.

This grant has made it possible to provide the following for those who attend:

Transportation - for those who struggle to travel from each corner of our county.

Childcare – sometimes we don’t have extra hands to watch our children at home. We will have entertainment on-site for your kids, and experienced staff with them while you’re one room away.

Catered Dinners – each night will include a catered dinner for you and your children to enjoy together after each session.

Giveaways & Prizes – We plan to have items for all children and adults in attendance, as well as raffle prizes each night.

We hope that EVERYONE will take advantage of this FREE opportunity to learn and grow as a caregiver. Each session will be held at the Harlan Center, and you can attend all three or the individual sessions that interest you most. Please register with the QR code below or contact Ms. Elizabeth for more information before May 22nd so that we are able to accommodate all who want to attend.
