Safe charging habits can make a powerful difference 🔋

This year’s Fire Prevention Week theme is “Charging Safely: Safe Charging is a Superpower,” highlighting the fire risks associated with lithium-ion batteries.

These small but powerful batteries are found in many of the devices we use every day, including cell phones, laptops, scooters, cordless power tools, and more.

According to the Bedford County Fire Marshal’s Office, three to four fires in Bedford County over the past year have been attributed to lithium-ion batteries. In one incident (pictured below), the fire originated in the area of a bank of chargers for cordless power tools. The basement was the only undamaged portion of this structure.

Here are some important safe-charging reminders:
🔌 Always use the charger that came with your device or one approved by the manufacturer.
🧱 Charge devices on a flat, hard surface and never on a bed, couch, or soft surface.
🔋 Unplug devices once they are fully charged.
🌳 When possible, charge tools and toys outside or in an open area away from living spaces.
🛑 Stop using a device if it becomes unusually hot, smells strange, changes shape, or shows other signs of damage.

Battery safety starts with awareness. A few simple charging habits can help reduce the risk of a fire and keep our homes and families safer.

Tomorrow may be an active weather period with multiple rounds of thunderstorms possible. Regardless of what time they arrive, make sure you have a way to receive warnings. The areas in red are the most likely to receive damaging wind gusts which will likely result in downed trees and power lines.
