Over the next few weeks, we will be highlighting sessions and activities that will be taking place during this exciting weekend.
Making the Most of Your Sheep Facilities will be a panel presentation and discussion that will feature four seasoned producers. This session will be taught both in the morning and in the afternoon on Friday, June 5.
Philip Berg was born and raised on a Pipestone, Minnesota sheep farm and continues to work with his family’s sheep operation. Philip worked for the North Dakota State University Research Center in Hettinger, ND, and the University of Minnesota Extension Service before becoming an instructor with the Pipestone Lamb and Wool Program (Minnesota West Community and Technical College). The Lamb and Wool Management Program’s goal is to help sheep producers increase income and profit through producer groups, facility tour, sheep for profit school, lambing time short course and several online courses.
Dr. Braden Campbell is a Ohio native and a 4th-generation sheep and swine producer. His family raises purebred Lincoln and Texel sheep, as well as crossbred sheep and commercial swine. He serves as Assistant Professor and Small Ruminant Extension Specialist at Ohio State University and serves as coordinator of the Ohio State Sheep Team. He received a B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. , within the Department of Animal Sciences at The Ohio State University.
Stan Poe II is a long-time sheep breeder based in Franklin, Indiana. Over the years, he has gained extensive hands-on experience in breeding, flock care, and best practices in livestock handling. Stanley and his wife, Jenna, raise Hampshires, Hampshire crosses, and whiteface crosses, and have most recently added Valais Blacknose sheep to their flock.
Tom Slack has been raising Suffolks since he was seven years old and has been raising them full-time in 1979. He began the current flock with 15 ewes after graduating from Purdue University and now runs 300 ewes in several breeds. Slack’s Formula for Champions Sale is an annual event for 47 years, and no spans several days in an online format. Tom and his wife Val with son Brett, operate one of the largest Suffolk flocks in the state of Indiana.
Kathy Krafka Harkema will moderate this session that is sure to provide valuable insights into facilities. Kathy is a lifelong Iowa Suffolk breeder and serves on the USSA Board of Directors.
