Register by May 1 for The Suffolk Event & bring the kids. Juniors who take part in educational sessions June 5 could win one of five $500 credits to put towards the purchase of a Suffolk ram or ewe June 6 in the National Suffolk Sale in Lebanon, Indiana on the Boone County Fairgrounds. That’s more than double the value of a family registration.

Plus juniors can show sheep purchased in the June 6 sale in the United Junior Suffolk Sheep Association - UJSSA show Sunday, June 7.

Join the fun. There’s something for everyone at The Suffolk Event, June 5-7 in a new location in Lebanon, Indiana, about an hour from Indianapolis.

The United Suffolk Sheep Foundation will offer $2,500 in sale credits again this year for the National Suffolk Sale. Youth ages 8-21 who register and attend the Friday educational program will be eligible to win one of 5 - $500 sale credits. The Foundation supports education and youth development and is pleased to recognize young people who participate in the Suffolk Event. Eligible youth will have their names entered into a random drawing that will take place right before the Friday evening sale preview. Youth must be present to win. Over the next few weeks, we will be highlighting sessions and activities that will be taking place during this exciting weekend.

Making the Most of Your Sheep Facilities will be a panel presentation and discussion that will feature four seasoned producers. This session will be taught both in the morning and in the afternoon on Friday, June 5.

Philip Berg was born and raised on a Pipestone, Minnesota sheep farm and continues to work with his family’s sheep operation. Philip worked for the North Dakota State University Research Center in Hettinger, ND, and the University of Minnesota Extension Service before becoming an instructor with the Pipestone Lamb and Wool Program (Minnesota West Community and Technical College). The Lamb and Wool Management Program’s goal is to help sheep producers increase income and profit through producer groups, facility tour, sheep for profit school, lambing time short course and several online courses.

Dr. Braden Campbell is a Ohio native and a 4th-generation sheep and swine producer. His family raises purebred Lincoln and Texel sheep, as well as crossbred sheep and commercial swine. He serves as Assistant Professor and Small Ruminant Extension Specialist at Ohio State University and serves as coordinator of the Ohio State Sheep Team. He received a B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. , within the Department of Animal Sciences at The Ohio State University.

Stan Poe II is a long-time sheep breeder based in Franklin, Indiana. Over the years, he has gained extensive hands-on experience in breeding, flock care, and best practices in livestock handling. Stanley and his wife, Jenna, raise Hampshires, Hampshire crosses, and whiteface crosses, and have most recently added Valais Blacknose sheep to their flock.

Tom Slack has been raising Suffolks since he was seven years old and has been raising them full-time in 1979. He began the current flock with 15 ewes after graduating from Purdue University and now runs 300 ewes in several breeds. Slack’s Formula for Champions Sale is an annual event for 47 years, and no spans several days in an online format. Tom and his wife Val with son Brett, operate one of the largest Suffolk flocks in the state of Indiana.

Kathy Krafka Harkema will moderate this session that is sure to provide valuable insights into facilities. Kathy is a lifelong Iowa Suffolk breeder and serves on the USSA Board of Directors.

40 or younger? Raise Suffolks? Apply for a young producer grant to attend The Suffolk Event June 5-7 in Indiana. Educational sessions on facilities, breeding, feeding, health, carcass merits & more presented by United Suffolk Sheep Foundation and United Suffolk Sheep Association. Plus activities, contests & a Suffolk breeding sheep & market show and showmanship clinic for members of the United Junior Suffolk Sheep Association - UJSSA. All that and a Suffolk Hall of Fame banquet, too.

Congratulations to Alice Nicklaus, Elsie McIntosh and Lilly Roe of Iowa who earned college scholarships presented through the United Suffolk Sheep Foundation.

Each of the young Iowans shows their Suffolks at the Iowa FFA Association breeding sheep show at the Iowa State Fair.

Lilly Roe serves as a national director for the United Junior Suffolk Sheep Association - UJSSA.
