Honoring Dispatcher Shirley Medling

Some heroes wear uniforms. Some carry radios. And some save lives with nothing more than a calm voice, steady hands, and a heart that refuses to give up.

At our April monthly meeting, we had the privilege of honoring Calhoun County Dispatcher Shirley Medling—a woman whose dedication and instinct made all the difference on a day none of us will ever forget.

Shirley answered a call from fellow Volunteer Ambulance member and firefighter Gary Hall, who was in the middle of an active heart attack. In those critical moments, when every second mattered, Shirley became the lifeline he desperately needed. Her training guided her, but it was her compassion, her steadiness, and her refusal to panic that truly saved his life.

Because of her, Gary is still here. Still laughing. Still serving. Still part of this community that loves him.

The resident who reached out to us said it best:
“Had she not been there… had she not acted… I might not be here today.”

Shirley, your work is often unseen, but it is never unnoticed. You matter more than you know. Your voice carries people through their darkest moments, and your courage gives families another chance to hold the ones they love.

Today, and every day, we are grateful for you.
Amazing job, Shirley. 💛
Our community is safer—and stronger—because of you.

On the morning of October 6th, 2025, around 8 a.m., a four‑unit apartment complex in White Hall, Illinois, caught fire—sending heavy smoke pouring from one of the units.
Robert and Tonya Moffitt were arriving for work at the property when they immediately noticed the smoke. Without hesitation, they rushed toward the building, banging on windows and doors to alert anyone inside. At that moment, they didn’t know if anyone was still in the apartment—they just knew they had to act.
Their quick thinking and refusal to stand by made all the difference.
It was later reported to Crime Stoppers that a resident, Danette, had still been asleep inside the burning unit. By the time Robert and Tonya reached her window and woke her, the smoke had grown even heavier. She has repeated many times, in conversations with Brenda at Crime Stoppers, that she is alive today because of them.
As the situation intensified, White Hall Police Officer Neil McPherson and Roodhouse Police Officer Jeremy Gwartney arrived on scene. They were informed that a woman attempting to escape had been overcome by smoke and had collapsed in a doorway. Without hesitation, both officers entered the burning apartment and carried her out together, ensuring she received immediate help.
Moments later, White Hall Fire Department personnel arrived. Firefighter Brad Costello entered the building to conduct one final sweep. During this search, he was overcome by smoke and initiated a “firefighter down” signal. Adam Moffitt quickly entered the structure and assisted in getting Firefighter Costello out of the burning building. Costello was later hospitalized for smoke inhalation.
Because of the courageous actions of multiple departments and civilians—each stepping forward without hesitation—every occupant made it out alive.
Today, we recognize and honor Robert and Tonya Moffitt, Officer Neil McPherson, Officer Jeremy Gwartney, Firefighter Brad Costello, and Adam Moffitt for their bravery, teamwork, and unwavering commitment to protecting others. Their actions reflect the very best of our community.

Absent tonight was Robert and Tonya Moffitt, and Officer Gwartney.

Our community recently witnessed an extraordinary act of courage and teamwork — the kind that reminds us why we are so grateful for the men and women who serve and protect.
A life‑threatening emergency unfolded when an individual was stung multiple times by hornets, triggering a severe and rapidly escalating medical crisis. Time was slipping away. Every second mattered.
When Officers Lawson, Liles, and Klunk arrived, they found the victim unresponsive. There was no hesitation. No pause. Only action.
These officers immediately began CPR and lifesaving measures, working together with precision and determination. As the situation worsened, they made a critical decision — one that required both courage and clarity under pressure.
Recognizing that waiting for additional medical transport could cost the victim their life, the officers chose to transport the individual themselves. One officer drove at emergency speed while another remained in the back, continuing CPR and lifesaving efforts the entire way to the hospital.
Their teamwork was seamless. Their focus unwavering. Their actions — swift, decisive, and deeply selfless — ensured the victim reached medical professionals in time to survive.
According to medical staff and the victim’s family, the outcome would likely have been tragically different without the officers’ immediate response and refusal to give up.
Today, we proudly honor Officers Lawson, Liles, and Klunk for their bravery, quick thinking, and unwavering commitment to preserving life. Their actions reflect the highest ideals of public service and the deepest values of this community.
Because of them, a life was saved.
Because of them, a family was spared unimaginable loss.
Because of them, we are reminded of the extraordinary people who wear this uniform.
Please join us in recognizing three true heroes —
Officer Lawson, Officer Liles, and Officer Klunk.

On a day that could have ended in tragedy, our community witnessed true courage on Pine Street.
A structure fire placed several residents in immediate, life‑threatening danger. Heavy black smoke poured from a second‑story window. Flames were visible. And inside that home, people were trapped with no way out.
In those moments—moments when every second mattered—one officer stepped forward without hesitation.
Officer Woelfel acted with instinct, clarity, and a level of bravery that defines true heroism.
He climbed onto a porch roof already threatened by heat and smoke. He forced open a boarded window, not knowing what he would find on the other side. And when he reached the trapped occupants, he didn’t just help them escape—he stayed with them. He shielded them. He put his own safety aside to ensure theirs.
His actions bought precious time. His courage created a path to survival. Because of his quick thinking, two people are alive today.
While today we highlight Officer Woelfel’s extraordinary actions, we also recognize the seamless teamwork that followed. Jerseyville police officers, firefighters, EMS personnel, and members of the Sheriff’s Department worked together to bring every occupant safely down from that roof and into the care they needed.
This rescue is a powerful reminder of what happens when dedication meets compassion—and why we are so grateful for the men and women who serve this community with courage every single day.

TWO RIVERS CRIME STOPPERS DONATES TO Roodhouse Police Department K9 UNIT!

Today, we came together to support an important mission: helping the Roodhouse Police Department acquire a new K9 unit. A police K9 is more than a dog — it’s a trained partner who can track missing individuals, detect dangerous substances, assist in high‑risk situations, and strengthen the safety of our entire community.
This kind of progress takes commitment, resources, and teamwork. And today, we’re celebrating a major milestone.
Two Rivers Crime Stoppers is honored to contribute a donation toward the acquisition of the new K9 unit. Our organization believes deeply in proactive community safety, and we are committed to supporting the officers who protect and serve every day. This donation reflects our belief in the value of the K9 program and our confidence in the leadership guiding it.
We especially want to recognize Officer Leyton Moffitt, whose dedication to the K9 program has been the driving force behind this initiative. His passion for training, his commitment to excellence, and his vision for what a K9 can bring to the department have inspired this effort. Thanks to his leadership, this future K9 will join a program built on professionalism, compassion, and a deep commitment to the people of Roodhouse.
On behalf of Two Rivers Crime Stoppers, we are proud to support Officer Moffitt and the Roodhouse Police Department’s K9 initiative. We believe in this mission, we believe in this department, and we believe in the positive impact this new K9 will have on our community.
To Officer Moffitt, the Roodhouse Police Department, and everyone working to make this K9 unit a reality — thank you. Together, we’re building a safer, stronger future for Roodhouse.
